A commencement ceremony turned unruly over the weekend when the keynote speaker, María Elena Salinas, one of the most prominent journalists in Spanish-language news in the U.S., underscored the achievement of the Latinos among graduates and made some remarks in Spanish.
Non-Latino graduates and their guests at California State University, Fullertons College of Communications booed the Univision anchor and yelled at her to leave the stage, according to a student who was at the ceremony.
In social media posts following the incident, the Peabody Award-winning journalist said she didnt notice the uproar and chalked it up to "sad racism on the rise."
One person, whose handle is @JakeHolzschuh, responded on Twitter, We were upset that your address was aimed at one ethnicity instead of the whole class. Had nothing to do with racism.
Salinas answered: Unless you're Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
The journalist, who is one of Univisions most prominent anchors, delivered two commencement speeches at Fullerton. One was delivered at the university-wide graduation, where she was given an honorary doctorate, the other at the universitys College of Communications commencement.
In tweets leading up to the ceremonies, Salinas said she was looking forward to addressing the graduates, noting that the university had the largest population of Latino students in the state. The universitys website puts the Latino student population at slightly more than 37 percent.
The second, smaller address was the one that created sparks, according to a first-person account by graduate Denise De La Cruz in the Orange County Weekly.
De La Cruz describes Salinas speech as well received until the anchor became a little too Latino-centric and blatantly anti-Trump.
De La Cruz said that Salinas asked the crowd to repeat some Spanish motivational words after her, parents in the crowd yelled, What about us?

And for those of us with blood it is a name we can accept if we so chose. I am not offended by it. I am offended by this Mexican telling me who is or isnt
Didn’t all humans move to the Americas?
There will be push-back against all this stuff people are trying to make happen.
Which is why Obama throws as many wrenches into the gears as he can. The Devil loves chaos. Oops, I meant Obama loves chaos.
And then there are redundant statements.
“Salinas answered: Unless you’re Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
Sorry, try answering the charge , bit**.
It’s about time.
Good to see our folks standing up.
Racism of the left is just as bad as any other form. Shame on this woman; she deserved the booing.
You got it exactly right. I’m always amazed, not surprised, but amazed at how Blacks and Hispanics think they can say anything they want, to any audience, and that audience is just supposed to agree with them. Yet, let someone white say something and it must be condemned and that individual shut up. It is the Third World definition of free speech, a definition that the likes of Salinas, Obama, and other Hispanics and Blacks agree with. It is not the definition laid out in the Constitution.

“Go up a rope.”
I initially was going to say the p-word was OK...but then I remembered the case that went to the US Supreme Court with George Carlin that begat: The Seven Words You Can’t Say On Television (or radio or FR, for that matter).

I would not have edited my self correctly, so hat tip to you for your excellent skills!
“Salinas answered: Unless you’re Native American, we are all from immigrant families.
So, my first family member coming here in 1492 makes me an immigrant.
The ‘Native Americans’ couldn’t even invent the wheel, much less navigate the oceans.
LOL!
“And then there are redundant statements.”
As in: The Department Of Redundant Repeating Department.
Loved your point!
Lol, if you accept the prevailing and PC explanation of how the world was populated, every group is an immigrant group except those who never migrated out of Africa.
What an ignoramus to have deliver a commencement speech.
That’s her? That gal looks like she has far more Conquistador blood than Indian blood.
Observations:
She has Jane Fonda’s eyes. I’ve seen them up close.
She also has Jane Fonda’s intelligence. I’ve heard that up close. NOT!
Salinas is more like a nice looking rotten tree. Green on the outside, hollow on the inside.
And I’m sure that she gives at least 50% of her income to poor immigrants. Waiting!!!
I am so sick of the “unless you are Native American we are all from immigrant families” BS.
1) I was born here. I am a native.
2) Most, and perhaps ALL Indians at some point in the past came from someplace else.
No way Jose!
Not to mention that Mexican citizens speak the language of European colonists and share more than incidental genetics with European immigrants. If only she had more Aztec in her heritage, her stridency wouldn’t sound so stupid.
See my post #20.
:)
The Department of Redundancy Department came from a college friend many, many, many years back. It was new to me, for sure, lol.
