A 5-year-old LaPlace girl died Saturday (May 21) after she accidentally shot herself while playing with a handgun, the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office said. Haley Moore was shot in the chest at the home of her father, Eric Moore, on Country Club Drive and brought to a local hospital where she died.
Neighbor Joy Ursin spoke with Moore Sunday morning said he is devastated. "He's faulting himself," she said.
Of Harley, Ursine said, "She was full of life, a very spunky little girl. She was just a firecracker."
Police have not offered any additional information since Saturday, but here's a recap of what we know as of Sunday morning:
Haley Moore was visiting her father, Eric Moore, this weekend. He and the 5-year-old's mother recently divorced, according to neighbors. Sheriff's Office Lt. Greg Baker said said Eric Moore was in the shower when the shooting occurred. Neighbors said he was getting ready to take Haley and her two older siblings out to eat and they later planned to see the "Angry Birds" movie.
Neighbors said Eric Moore is a military veteran who served in Iraq. He was known to keep weapons in his house, but neighbors said he regularly stressed that they were safely stored. The family has lived on Country Club Drive for about four years.

“My kids knew about gun safety at a young age. I had taken my daughter shooting when she was around four and bought her a cricket 22lr. I could leave a gun out and my daughter would not touch it. My son, who is younger than my daughter, is a different story.”
Teaching kids about guns is smart but children younger than about 10 cannot be fully trusted around deadly weapons no matter how much they are trained. Just like you cannot reliably teach a 5 year old not to get in a car with a stranger. They are simply not mature enough.
My daughter was a strange kid. One of my neighbor’s described her as an old soul in a young body.
What you said is true. My H&R has a 12-14 pound trigger pull. The key is don’t let the kid get their hands on it.
Yup - I’m with you. This story, as written, makes no sense. If anyone is leaving a loaded gun on the kitchen table, covered up or not, with little kids running around, really???
Plus this:
“Neighbors said he was getting ready to take Haley and her two older siblings out to eat....”
How old are these siblings? etc etc etc
“Neighbor Joy Ursin spoke with Moore Sunday morning said he is devastated. “He’s faulting himself,” she said.”
As well he damn sure should. That child is dead because of his neglect.
Not only that, but he’s given the anti-gunners a lot of ammo (forgive the use of the term).
There’s always a chance he did it. A divorce is involved. It’s happened before. I guess the final police report will find the true facts.
Indeed.
Or did he?
Left a loaded .45 on the kitchen table, huge mistake.
Or did he?
I imagine he instructed or expected the two older siblings to watch after the youngest while he was in the shower instead of securing the weapon.
Do you have any reason to think he didn’t?
How many stories about Children left in a Hot Car and dying?
How many stories about Children getting out a back Door or an open Gate and drowning in the Family Pool?
How many stories of Children getting their hands on Prescription Drugs in the Home, overdosing and dying?
How many stories of Children accidentally run over in the Family Homes Driveway by a Parent?
How many of the Stories listed above are Politicized by people who hate Cars, Swimming Pools and Life Saving Prescription Drugs? Just askin’.
Like anything else in Life, negligence happens.
>> Rats love dancing in the blood.
Yup. Scumbags.
He’s faulting himself? Who else should he fault? His ex-wife for letting him have the kids for the weekend? Pul-lease.
