A 5-year-old LaPlace girl died Saturday (May 21) after she accidentally shot herself while playing with a handgun, the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office said. Haley Moore was shot in the chest at the home of her father, Eric Moore, on Country Club Drive and brought to a local hospital where she died.
Neighbor Joy Ursin spoke with Moore Sunday morning said he is devastated. "He's faulting himself," she said.
Of Harley, Ursine said, "She was full of life, a very spunky little girl. She was just a firecracker."
Police have not offered any additional information since Saturday, but here's a recap of what we know as of Sunday morning:
Haley Moore was visiting her father, Eric Moore, this weekend. He and the 5-year-old's mother recently divorced, according to neighbors. Sheriff's Office Lt. Greg Baker said said Eric Moore was in the shower when the shooting occurred. Neighbors said he was getting ready to take Haley and her two older siblings out to eat and they later planned to see the "Angry Birds" movie.
Neighbors said Eric Moore is a military veteran who served in Iraq. He was known to keep weapons in his house, but neighbors said he regularly stressed that they were safely stored. The family has lived on Country Club Drive for about four years.

Perhaps I should have been more specific...I was looking for something somewhat more detailed, more comprehensive, than the explanation contained in the article.
I’m so sorry for that loss and this is one as well.
Just can’t imagine the grief coupled with guilt .
I see what you meant now.
it is his fault...
The areas around New Orleans have a much lower crime rate. The thugs from Orleans know that if they get out of their area of operation they stand a good chance of getting gunned down.
“OK...the obvious...how in GODS name does a 5 year old get a hold of a firearm???”
Two words: careless adults.
Yikes!
Had a friend and one of his twin boys accidentally shot/killed the other with a 357. at the age of around 12 years old.
They all were gun savy as kids, hunted, range time, all go it... but one day for some unknown reason???
This friend never recovered and ruined his own life in the aftermath.
Perhaps the only punninshment in such cases would be that they could not get a gun permit for a set amount of years, and then after classes. I agree, they should not be locked up for it. Very little remains secret these days when the incident involves children and violence due to abuse or negligence. Now everybody knows about one of the worst days in the life of this family.
I wouldn't bet a nickel against one or more suicides happening in that family in the not-too-distant future.
I would not take your bet.
I can’t even imagine what he’s going through.
You could do anything to me at that point, I wouldn’t care. The worst had already happened.
Agreed, I just don’t believe in keeping a round in the chamber if there are any kids around.
5 year old girl is not going to be able to rack the slide, but they can take it off safety and pull the trigger.
Terrible story
An H&R .32 S&W long loaded with Federal Personal Defense .32 H&R Magnum 85 Grain JHP.
“So he had all week to prep for weekend with kids so he gets them and then decides to take a shower?”
Been really hot the past several days in LA. You wind up taking 3 or 4 showers a day just to rinse off the sweat.
“That’s why I like a revolver with a heavy trigger pull. A five year old would not be able to pull the trigger.”
Don’t count on that. What happens is the child will turn the gun towards them and pull the trigger with their thumbs. That’s why so many little children shoot themselves instead of just discharging the gun.
The areas surrounding New Orleans have a high percent of people carrying. That is why crime is not completely out of control, but crime still has been creeping up over the years.
“He’s faulting himself,”
Duh. Who else would be at fault?
More propaganda for the gun-grabbers. Exploiting the death of a little girl for their fascist politics.
Rats love dancing in the blood.
