A STRING QUARTET + 1

BRAHMS: PIANO QUINTET IN F MINOR, OP. 34, POCO SOSTENUTO, ALLEGRO NON TROPPO

While audiences loved the finale of his Piano Quartet in G minor, Op. 25, with its flashing gypsy style, Brahms questioned whether that was the right way to finish a piece. This problem would haunt him for some years before he solved it to his satisfaction with his First Symphony.

This quintet’s finale starts with the kind of tonally ambiguous introduction that would define music a generation later. This was Brahms leaving his contemporaries in the dust. You can’t figure out what key he’s in – and Brahms doesn’t want you to figure it out either.

But eventually he settles into F minor for a theme based on “Frere Jacque,” but in a minor key. Just as Beethoven wrapped up his Ninth Symphony with four codas in the finale, Brahms does the same. The intensity increases to the very end, which features a blow-off on all five instruments.

This is a historic performance featuring many people I’ve seen in live performance over the years. The pianist in this video died shortly after this was taped.

Brahms: Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, fourth movement

A STRING QUARTET + 1

DVORAK: PIANO QUINTET IN A, OP. 81, ALLEGRO MA NON TANTO

This is another of the great warhorses of the chamber repertory, but it has a sunnier disposition than the Brahms piece. The first movement in 2/2 flashes between major and minor with reckless abandon, the way Czech music does. The second subject at 2:43 in F# minor is just juicy. This performance skips the exposition repeat, which is a blessing, because that first ending doesn’t work well at all.

Development is based on the first subject.

The recap at 7:30 is welcome, and the coda at 10:09 just takes your breath away.

A STRING QUARTET + 1

DVORAK: PIANO QUINTET IN A, OP. 81, ANDANTE CON MOTO

This slow movement in F# minor and 2/4 is in A-B-A-C-A-B-A format. It’s a dumka, a Czech piece that alternates between happiness and sadness. The “A’ section sounds a lot like “Nature Boy,” the hit from 1947 written by an early hippie. Dvorak was a violist, and that opening viola theme is something that violists will kill to play.

The “B” theme sounds a bit like “Alfie,” the old Burt Bacharach tune from 1966.

The “A” theme returns with all its heartbreak.

The “C” theme jumps to the very strange time signature of 2/8 for a vivace passage that takes off like a shot.

The “A” theme comes back again on first violin.

The “B” theme’s return is in 6 sharps, F# Major, which gives the piano part a special brilliance.

The return of the “A” theme brings back the sadness, and it ends with a reach for the handkerchief.

DVORAK: PIANO QUINTET IN A, OP. 81, MOLTO VIVACE

For sheer joy, you can’t beat this scherzo in A Major. It’s a furiant, a Czech dance especially designed for chair dancing. It’s in the usual A-B-A format, with the cental panel in F Major sounding suspiciously like Neil Diamond’s “Holly Holy.”

This video is an Israeli Chamber Music project. The first violinist is Carmit Zori, a sergeant in the IDF Reserves when she isn’t playing violin. You should see her at rehearsals! She’s a real DI on her people, but it pays off at performance time.

DVORAK: PIANO QUINTET IN A, OP. 81, ALLEGRO

This cross between a 2/4 polka and Czech ragtime in sonata format is irresistible. It’s fun to just kick back and let Tony Dvorak take you on a pleasant journey.

The development section even has a cute little fugue. The recap of the first subject is drastically shortened before going into the second subject. For the coda, he slows it down until you think he’s going to end it softly in a dreamy fashion. But then he whirls it around faster and faster to a wild finish.
