"I believe in forced labor" when it comes to improving access to justice for the poor, forced labor = concentration camps + gulags + collective farms + compulsory assignment to jobs + labor books + forcibly determent from changing jobs + illegal to be unemployed + black markets + workers sneaking off their jobs + breakdown in discipline + miserable service

That is one sick chiquita. Hard to believe someone with pro-slavery views sits on the highest court in the land.

Strip her of her appointment and leave her on the streets for awhile then ask her if she should be required to provide services for free.

I believe in mandatory ditch digging and janitorial service by all Supreme Court Justices.

"I believe in forced labor"Far be it from me to advise a learned juror of Justice Sotomayor's eminence, but she might want to reread that part of the 13th Amendment that deals with involuntary servitude.

They've done this to medicine, while preserving the right for lawyers to sue for enormous sums, so it would be only right that they apply their ‘logic’ universally.
Personally, I think it would be great if physicians and attorneys donate time to those who can't afford their services. Many do. That said, it's not the government's place to force this, and it means so much more (and likely has a much more positive effect) when it is done voluntarily - as with all things.
The government could, however, have a positive role in this if they encouraged this kind of service by giving tax credit for voluntary services. If the Clintons could claim charitable donations for giving away used underwear, then voluntarily giving free (or very discounted) service should also qualify.

Gee. Where does THAT stop?
I am sure EVERYONE has a cause like that. Do we ALL get to mandate forced labor for our favorite cause?
I think we all know where that would stop.
It wouldn't.

Coming with that 5th Justice. Involuntary Servitude itself will be Decided to be Constitutional if legitimate government goals require it.

"Pro bono publico" is a Latin phrase for professional work undertaken voluntarily.....So now the Libs want mandatory volunteering. Joseph Stalin had that figured out a century ago.

Notice how the Wise Latina didn't define the number of hours of unpaid services to meet
her requirements. Same line of logic used by those in favor of progressive tax rates to punish the rich. They never, ever state the marginal tax rate they deem sufficient to suit their requirements.
Then I considered the brilliance of my accounting professor in college, a great man who was my instructor for over 30 semester hours in college.
His tests were 100% essay, always five questions, of which at least two, if not three, of the questions would be answered thusly: "based on the information you've given me, I cannot answer your question." That would be followed by an answer discussing the accounting theory embedded in the question. It was not unusual to turn in upwards of ten pages (two for each answer) in the hour allotted to us.
Forty years later, I realize that he aided my cognitive abilities, and greatly developed my BS detector.
