U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said Monday that all lawyers should be required to provide pro bono legal services. "I believe in forced labor" when it comes to improving access to justice for the poor, she said during an appearance at the American Law Institute's annual meeting in Washington. "If I had my way, I would make pro bono service a requirement."

If it is legal to do it to doctors and hospitals, why is it not legal to do it to lawyers and law firms?

(Hint: It has something to do with who makes the laws)

Sotomayor and Kagan were affirmative action liberal Democrat appointees that were grave mistakes. Any more like them on the SCOTUS will make the US turnaround almost impossible and the slide will be more like a precipitous drop into socialism and/or communism.

I’m an attorney and I already do involuntary pro bono work. It’s the work I do for clients who later don’t pay my bill.

Few things in life are free.

Mandate Pro Bono work and the lawyers will just raise the rate they charge paying clients.

I thought that we had public defenders on the government payroll. So how is it a poor person does not have legal representation?

"I believe in forced labor" when it comes to improving access to justice for the poor,

forced labor = concentration camps + gulags + collective farms + compulsory assignment to jobs + labor books + forcibly determent from changing jobs + illegal to be unemployed + black markets + workers sneaking off their jobs + breakdown in discipline + miserable service

Apparently the 13th Amendment didn't abolish ALL slavery:

Amendment XIII

Section 1.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

That is one sick chiquita. Hard to believe someone with pro-slavery views sits on the highest court in the land.

That right there is some BEAUTIFUL Schadenfreude for that majority of our legal profession who faithfully support the Democrat Party.

While I’ll grant that; it raises a point: what crimes have lawyers as-a-class done, and where are the convictions?

Strip her of her appointment and leave her on the streets for awhile then ask her if she should be required to provide services for free.

"I believe in forced labor"

Far be it from me to advise a learned juror of Justice Sotomayor's eminence, but she might want to reread that part of the 13th Amendment that deals with involuntary servitude.
