They have a knack for picking stupid and known-only-to-leftist-kooks idols to worship.
I use “startpage” as my search engine. It proxies Google’s search power, but you don’t get the targeted ads, activism, and enjoy anonymous searching. :)
Plus it takes money out of their wallet as they generate zero advertising revenue off of me.
I personally don’t like Bing’s results format, but I do agree that Microsoft has a surprisingly conservative privacy policy for both Outlook/Hotmail and their search engine.

For those who STILL don’t know, Google and the USGOV are one.
Other countries didn’t see this “doodle,” only target countries.
If all of google were turned off, the internet and even societies would collapse.
No gmail for the world.
No google docs or office apps, which many businesses rely on.
No google cloud (will you ever see your data again?)
No google voice, phone services,.
No google translation, voice to text, etc.
No google DNS.
No google search.
No google certificates, SSL, trust, chains, root certs, etc.
No etc, etc, etc.
Now consider a majority of the world’s websites broken or useless, or failing to load, or failing to have full functionality.
Even FreeRepublic has google analytics on every page (Can you say NSA, CIA?) That isn’t to imply any connection, simply google’s pervasiveness, penetration, and ubiquitousness.
Forbid yourself from doing anything on the internet - desktop, laptop, or mobile for a full week and you’ll start to understand what life without google is like.
Trying to avoid google is impossible. Even if one is very technically sophisticated, employs special tools and never makes a mistake, you still wind up at a site like FreeRepublic that uses google analytics.
Try this simple experiment:
Post something to FreeRepublic using a made up nonsense word like TreeGreenTurtle307.
Now go to google.com and search for that term like this:
site:freerepublic.com TreeGreenTurtle307
It will show up WORLDWIDE in minutes or even seconds.
Anything that says “Enhanced by Google” should be avoided like the plague.
Essentials are:
1. A VPN to a Free country (not any of the Five Eyes), even China.
2. TOR
If you don’t use TOR, Ublock ORIGIN is excellent.

It’s searched are “enhanced by Google” but your searches are not tracked and there is no contact with google on that platform. Searches done by Startpage using google, it’s Startpage’s server doing the searches, not your computer. Now, when you go to a site like FR or anywhere else, that’s a different story altogether, you are correct. You are right again when you say it is nearly impossible not to avoid google. I’d say that’s been true for the last 15 years at least. But, there are certainly things one can do to minimize difficulties.
