[history]
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says in a letter that he has the power to name warships as he chooses, in response to a former Marine and congressman who charges he has politicized the process.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and House Armed Services Committee member, wrote Mr. Mabus to question the naming of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer after former Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

As Commander-in-Chief, I’m willing to bet that President Trump has the executive authority to rename any Naval vessel that has been labeled inappropriately.
We’ll start with the so-called USS Gabby Gifford, and follow up with the USS Jimmy Carter, two names that have no business adorning ANY warship of the United States Navy.
But we can name a garbage scow after Mabus, and the next ship to be used for live target practice before being sunk for an artifical reef, we’ll rename it the Barky O’Bama.

Cesar Chavez, Medgar Evers, John Lewis. Gun Grabber Giffords.
Murtha, while a corrupt democrat, had served as a Marine officer and headed the defense subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee.

Perhaps he is waiting for the furor to die down before naming the next ship ‘USS John Wayne Gacy’.

The USS Barney Frank is a FFP not a SSN. The Barney Frank class of FFP’s can pack fudge at more than 30 knots.

I suspect that the service will do some house cleaning after the election.

“He named a San Diego-class docking ship after another Democrat, the late Rep. John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania. The previous nine ships had been named after U.S. cities, a park and a county, following Navy conventions”
Was not this one involved in the ABSCAM investigation??

Yep, but Murtha was so corrupt his name should only be on a garbage scow, he used that committee position to pad the pockets of his contributors and supporters.

Having spent some time at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEASCOM), I never heard about it being bad luck to rename a ship, but I did hear that it has always been considered bad luck to have a woman or women on board a ship, and that it was always considered a throw of the dice to name a ship after a woman unless the woman in question was a patriotic figure (Dolly Madison, Kate Smith, Mamie Eisenhower for example), but only in a matronly function, i.e., hospital ships, transports, etc.
