Doctors routinely ask if you smoke, and counsel you to wear your seat belt when youre in a car. Technically, either behavior isnt any of their business, but they do fall under the umbrella of preventive care.
Now Dr. Garen Wintemute, director of the violence prevention research program at the University of California Davis, and his colleagues want to add firearms to the office visit for similar reasons.
First, he says that no federal or state laws prevent doctors from asking their patients about whether they have guns in the home.

After he says “Nice Sig. 229?”
Only if he plans to invite me to go shooting with him.
Seat belt - it happens in Minnesota, along with other questions. It got so bad up there, I gave routine PC answers that would put Pajama Boy to shame.

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” Benjamin Franklin
It’s a slippery road.
“Well if they ever do ask, ask why it is relevant when 225,000 us citizens die by doctors each year while only 12,500 die by firearms. Thats like 20 to 1”
excellent point!!!!! putting that one in the memory bank in case it’s needed. Thank you
If your doctor asks if you own guns, just take Nancy Reagan's advice:
The more tin foil conspiracy prone among us will also note that all doctor's medical records are now computerized and accessible by the federal government, so the answer to this question becomes part of your permanent medical record for all to see.
Nothing says you have to tell the doctor the truth.
One of my doctors and I discuss guns almost every time I go. He tells me what his latest is and I make the appropriately impressed noises. I don’t think this is what the article was talking about though.
Think that’s intrusive and none of their business? My kids’ pediatrician asks that. Apparently it’s part of their questioning now so it’s not as if I could just take them to another one. When I take them I troll with all sorts of weapon names (some made up) so they have no idea if any of it is true or not.
I tell them "I don't talk about that. I don't want to spoil the surprise."
>>I was nice, and didnt tell the VA nurse interviewer it was none of his business. I just said NO!
Best answer. Forget about all the silly counter questions and talk of boating accidents. Just lie and say NO. That’s how you survive in a police state. Watch the ghetto rats to learn skills that we will need to survive. If they get caught standing over a dead body with a gun in their hand and blood spatter on their face, they just automatically start with, “I don’t know what happened. I didn’t do anything. This isn’t my gun and I don’t know how it got in my hand.”
Being a good cooperative citizen in an evil, corrupt state is stupid and dangerous.
I check "other" or write in "human" when I get a chance.
Guns have nothing to do with medicine, so it’s none of his business.
Well doctor, do you enjoy living?
If a doctor ever asks me if I own a gun, I will leave his office without saying a word. So shoukd you.
Should Americans ask if Obama was born in America
When we moved to TN I 2010, the form we filled out for our new doctor asked about guns in the house. We left it blank. (I expected better from TN.)
Should Your Doctor Ask If You Own Guns?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Nope.
Unless you want to pay higher medical insurance and have huge deductibles.
The status of one’s 2nd amendment rights is no business of the doctors or the medical insurance companies.
If my doctor asked me, I would simply change doctors.
Only if he is looking for a shooting partner.
Smoking, sure. Diet and exercise, sure. But I’ve never heard of a doc advising anyone to wear a seat belt, so I call BS on that.

My neurologist’s nurse asked me the seat belt question but not about guns.
