Daryl Hall is possibly the most interesting man in music. He and John Oates form the most successful musical duo of all time, and even though, their setlists during sold out shows around the world are full of instantly recognizable hits from the 1970s and 80s, they are not a nostalgia act.
More than other performers in their age bracket, including The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, Daryl Hall and John Oates have constructed a coalition of baby boomers who remember where they were when Rich Girl or Sara Smile first hit the radio, and thirty and twenty-something fans who enjoy the smooth, soulful, and pop-infused style of I Cant Go For That and Out of Touch as if those songs came out yesterday.

Abandoned Luncheonette was my favorite H&O album, with Las Vegas Turnaround (your link), Had I Known You Better Then, When The Morning Comes, She’s Gone, and other awesome songs. Great lyrics, beautiful melodies, tight, spare (relatively) productions.
When they started their early 80s mega-hits, I feel they sold out and I didn’t care for them as much then—though I do think they were always excellent songwriters, singers, and musicians. Apparently the 1980s hits were largely co-written by Daryl’s GF/wife, who had a great pop sensibility, but it launched the boys into a whole different style.
That’s what happens when people read the headlines, don’t read the article, make assumptions about what it says and post their replies. Classic Free Republic. Same as it ever was. But now worse..l
Broken keyboard...
Thats the takeaway of other posters, the author, and the headline.
I think the core of the article is how Daryl has a chat show to discuss and play new music and help get other artists a leg up in a lousy music corporate culture world.
The FR excerpt is about how his is not a nostalgia band and they rally rank among the best vocal duos ever.
Even Boy George would say they look too gay.
I read the entire article. I like him. I really like him!
BTW, he is top five of the best male singers of all time (in my book, of course)
Good piece.
“Well, then they should go back to school. Academia? Now, theres a hotbed of idiocy.”
Bingo.
Live from Daryl’s House is an awesome show. Some of my favorites were Joe Walsh, Rob Thomas, and Grace Potter. Rob Thomas’s rearrangement of “Kiss on My List” is outstanding.
They are NOT gay. It was a record company who wanted to use a very unflattering photo for an article.
Does anyone remember what happened to Ann and Nancy Wilson when a certain photo was used for an article? Some in the press called them lesbians.. In turn they wrote “Barricuda” and had a strong hatred for the press since then.
Its funny how threads go off the rails sometimes.
Amazing how many folks do not read the article prior to commenting.
I’m glad it was a keyboard. I thought you might have had a stroke or sump’n!!
Are you trying to say that I dont own the style of music that I grew up with and sing? I grew up with this music. It is not about being black or white. That is the most naïve attitude Ive ever heard in my life. That is so far in the past, I hope, for everyones sake. It isnt even an issue to discuss. The music that you listened to when you grew up is your music. It has nothing to do with cultural appropriation.
I agree with you entirely, because
Im glad that you do, because anyone who says that should shut the f**k up
Well, this entire critique is coming back
Im sorry to hear it. Who is making these critiques? Who do they write for? What are their credentials to give an opinion like that? Who are they?
Much of it is academic.
Well, then they should go back to school. Academia? Now, theres a hotbed of idiocy.
Anyone who knows about music, about culture in general, understands that everything is much more natural. Everything is a mixture.
We live in America. Thats our entire culture. Our culture is a blend. It isnt split up into groups. Anyone who says otherwise is a fool worse than a fool a dangerous fool.
I also know that you dont like the term blue eyed soul
No, and it is for this very reason. There is no color to soul. Soul music comes from the heart. It was generated out of the church, and it became secular gospel.
Ray Charles made that same point. He said the only difference between gospel and soul is that in one genre he sings to God, and in another, he sings to a woman.
Thats right. Thats exactly it.
Daryl Hall is exactly right as well. Without a doubt they have been the most successful duo whose career has spanned decades now with many hits.
Way to go Daryl!
Hey, not just any guy can wear shiny pink Sansabelt pants and get away with it.
Darryl’s Place is about 20 minutes from me in Pawling, NY.
Look for the youtube videos. Tons of musical guests that play there.
BTTT.
The Carpenters sold far more records.
Here is another version of I can’t go for that with Rumer. I have no idea who she is.
I prefer the one with Cee Lo but this one has a more smooth vibe

You get it.
At least I wasn’t drunk posting!
