U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, plans to run for re-election in 2018.
Cruz, who ended his presidential campaign last week, said "yes" when asked Wednesday morning by a reporter in Washington, D.C., if he would seek a second term, according to CNN and The Hill. Cruz's office later confirmed the exchange.
The announcement adds some clarity to Cruz's political future following his decision to exit the presidential race on May 3. While Cruz could change his mind, running for re-election in 2018 puts to rest some speculation he would sit out a second term to prepare for a comeback bid for the White House in 2020.
Cruz was first elected to the Senate in 2012, when he upset then-Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the Republican primary to replace Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Any worthy names?
We need the Senate. He likely has a better chance of being re-elected than a newbie.
“... puts to rest some speculation he would sit out a second term to prepare for a comeback bid for the White House in 2020...”
Even if he gets re-elected to the Senate, it won’t stop him from running for president in 2020...The Senate is just a place to sit until then...
As far a Republican senators go, Ted has been pretty conservative, but his masked was ripped off in a major way this primary season. He turned out to not be as conservative as many had hoped, and there’s some serious issues with his demeanor and overall ability to play in the sandbox. He may even be a little off kilter. Who knows? And he will forever be seen as Lyin’ Ted.
... Or You'll Get What SHE Got!"
Personally, I’d be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and learn from his mistakes of the present in the hope that he becomes an ally of the future.
Good lord people. Quit attacking conservatives.
“We need the Senate. He likely has a better chance of being re-elected than a newbie.”
Isn’t that what they said about Dewhurst? In the meanwhile, Cruz has shown himself to be something of a fraud, a user, a liar, overly ambitious, and not particularlyl likable. Yeah, that’s re-electable.
It's hilarious to hear Cruz criticized by Trump people for not being conservative.
Sure glad Texas has the a$$...I will never vote for him, under any circumstances!!!
Not sure about that. Now that people know he failed to disclose financial information the first time around, will they reconsider? Also, what’s he done for Texas? There are more important things to being a Senator than just grandstanding by reading books during a futile filibuster in order to lay the groundwork for your name recognition in preparation for an upcoming Presidential run. Then there’s the matter of how he conducted himself during the campaign.
I really don’t care too much, as I’m not a Texan, but you can be sure that as a Floridian, I wouldn’t vote for Rubio a second time around, knowing what I know now.
Lots for Texans to consider.
I remember when Cruz was a conservative’s conservative. What happened, except in your mind?
no no no no.... Don’t think about getting rid of him- he is an incumbent senator...and he was/is good in the senate
If the GOP tries to primary him that would be bad
Instead of primarying conservatives, let's go after RINOs like Juan McCain, Mark Kirk and Jeff Flake.
Cruz has a problem with H1B Visas and those darn trade authorizations. No one believes his excuses on those anymore.
But little Marco is missing his chance this year. He’ll have to spend the next few years at foam parties.
It’s win win for a constitutional senate, and the ‘Gang’ is down to 7.
Some of you folks trash Cruz and then you whine when some Cruz supporters don't unite around Trump.
Hillary needs to loose. Your type of posts are helping her.
