It is as iconic an image from the criminal underworld as the Tommy gun, or the getaway car, a grim last act for the unfortunate soul whose life is about to end in a new pair of footwear.
Cement shoes.

Thats gotta be one of the most horrible ways to die. Vlad the Impaler would take issue with that.

About 15 years ago, they dredged up a block of concrete in the Detroit River with two leg bones sticking out. Police couldn’t determine how old the bones were. I’d guess prohibition.

Name that tune:
Gonna buy a fast car, put on my lead boots
And take a long drive
I may end up spending all my money,
But I’ll still be alive

What would be the preferred cement to use? Hydraulic? Fast set cement?

"Cement shoes, fabled anchor to watery grave, surfaces in Brooklyn" They aren't that heavy if they surfaced.

Another one of Zero’s sons violently bites the dust. Really surprising since they are all such choir boys.

As a writer, this kind of story seems just interesting.

One of my friends “drowned” when he was twelve years old, or so. They pulled him out of the water and were able to revive him. He told me the drowning process itself was horribly excruciatingly painful. Especially at first. Then there was the fear that made it worse. But just before he lost consciousness, he suddenly gave up and relaxed; he wasn’t afraid anymore and he wasn’t in pain, just at peace with it, almost euphoric.

It was written by John Entwistle for his solo album, but ended up on Who’s Next, as you know, an all time classic.
That song and Baba Oreilly are on my workout playlist.

Did trapped body gases make him float despite the added weight of the cement?
Maybe I have read too much detective fiction.
