The people of Chicago are deeply riven by race, class and neighborhood, distrustful of the police, fearful of the growing rate of violent crime and united chiefly in their disapproval of the mayors performance and their conviction that the city is headed down the wrong track.
These are among findings of a new survey by The New York Times and the Kaiser Family Foundation, which polled residents of a city that has been upended in recent months by revelations of questionable actions by the police, threats of a teachers strike, a school funding crisis and an uptick in violence.
The poll finds broad discontent with the police and those charged with overseeing them, particularly among African-Americans. Residents expressed concerns about racial bias in shootings by officers and many show ambivalence about whether calling the police will ease situations or not make a difference. Document: Chicago Poll Results
Residents of Chicago, the nations third-largest city, appear to have lost faith in many of its essential institutions, including the police, courts and the public schools.
The sharpest levels of discontent appear among black residents on the South and West Sides. When it comes to hopes for young people, satisfaction with city services and especially expectations about interactions with the police, the divide between black and white Chicago is striking.
It seems like the police can do anything and get away with it, Enix Daniels, who is 50 and black and lives on the West Side, said in a follow-up interview. There are no repercussions. If we do something, we have to pay a bond before we get out. If they do something they get to sit at their desk.

it is an obvious exaggeration yes, but it does help make the point how far Chicago has sunk. as have many of our larger cities....
(as it happens, I was thinking of Midway not Ohare airport but yes, I’ve been in ChiTown many times and have used both airports...as well as Milwaukee airport (which is very beautiful and tries to attract the ChiTown market, too, though it seemed a bit of a stretch).
if we could stop the government from destroying our economy, I think many of our depressed and much-troubled cities could start recovering

“Residents of Chicago, the nations third-largest city, appear to have lost faith in many of its essential institutions, including the police, courts and the public schools”
When you’re look for who’s to blame, don’t forget to look in the mirror.
I don’t know, maybe she is thinking of Midway.
If you get off at O’Hare and go sightsee, you’re just going to find hotels, office buildings and a Hooters.
Now Philly is a town that I would hate leaving the airport... to get to any of the tourist spots from the airport there, you have to drive through tenement ghettos that look like something from a 70s blaxploitation movie.
I’ve been reading up on the Chicago mob. Nothing has changed.
‘O’Hare is so far outside of Chicago it’s really in Chicago “in name only.”’
This is really true. Technically, the only thing connecting O’Hare to the rest of Chicago is a foot-wide strip of land down the median of the Kennedy expressway.
Come the next Mayoral election, if a leftist diversity candidate is elected, White liberals will be on the menu.
At this point, the best course of action would be to break up Chicago into multiple districts. If not, its just a matter of time before it all looks like Detroit, except maybe for the Loop and a sliver of the Gold Coast.
How about if everyone just obeyed the law and behaved in a civilized manner?
Maybe there wouldn’t be so much ‘discontent’ with the police.
A lot has changed: the mobs have been replaced by the politicians.
Cut off all food and water, wait about 60 days then send the national guard in to arrest and jail any survivors. Burn what's left to the ground and start over.
wow! That is a name from the past. I remember him with tears after getting thrown out in 94.
Good luck to you. There is no way in hell that I could live around that kind of garbage.
I would sooner sell everything I had and move several states away and start a chicken farm.
Well, at least you have a plan. ;>)
It is so sad what has happened to Chicago. Neighborhoods like Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Boystown, etc are high in crime. There is a terrific blog called “Crime in Wrigleyville and Boystown” - which tells the truth of what is going on. People are attacked on the trains in the middle of the day - no one steps in to help. Same on the buses. Glad you were able to escape the two thugs. As a woman, I find this very upsetting. All the best to you.
Or that.
Maybe another few hundred pages of gun control laws would help... and 'job training' programs... Oh - and a march or two or fifty.
This lack of concern was first manifest in NYC in 1964: was her name Kitty Genovese? They might help if they knew you were a fellow liberal.
I suspect that deep down ol’ Ben Franklin would not have been surprised at all the horrors that overcame his beloved Philadelphia.
