Mary Matalin, a high-profile political pundit and veteran strategist for the Republican Party, changed her party registration to Libertarian from Republican, she said on Thursday.
But in an interview with Bloomberg Politics, which reported on the switch, she emphasized that her decision was not connected to Donald J. Trumps being the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
She described herself as a voter as a provisional Trump and a never Hillary, referring to the leading Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

She still favors Trump and opposes Hillary Clinton.
She should change husbands first...
As long as she still is for Trump, then let her join the Snake Kissers Party. There, she’d fit in perfectly.
Another RINO goes rouge. Good.
I recall going to a local Libertarian Party meet up. It was strange.
They kept making Ayn Rand references, and one of them stated they were “dark enlightenment thinker.” It matched the stereotype in my mind.
Despite her questionable taste in men, her dumping the GOP sounds like a very sane decision. They have certainly been a circular firing squad since second term Bush. I intend to give the down ticket pubbies the same level of support they have given Donald Trump.
Watching the alleged leaders of the Republican Party whine and scream and stamp their feet over Trump’s nomination, I suspect she’ll be the first of many.
All RINO and RINO supporters need to depart and go to their true calling, the national socialists that is the Democrat party. I can only hope that Trump as a nationalist turns conservative and pulls the Republican name with him in that direction.
Excellent, now all the warmongers want to take over the Libertarian party
“She still favors Trump and opposes Hillary Clinton.”
If so, why did she time the announcement for immediately after Trump’s victory, particularly when her patrons the Bushes announced through intermediaries they won’t support Trump?
There is an agenda here. Everything Carville and Matalin do is calculated. That’s their business.
I’d dump the Republicans too but then I couldn’t vote in the primaries
She and snake head have pretty much milked the "battling married pundits but we still love each other" schtick about as much as they can
Glenn Beck was just singing her praises, she was on his radio show. Just missed what she actually said, I’m sure it was nothing complimentary to Trump.
Said I, 'about two-thirds of the earth's population would move to the United States if they could and most would vote to turn it into the very type of corrupt third world cesspool from which they escaped.'
If they would stop letting Libertarians run on the Republican ticket, we could have a truly conservative patriot chosen by the people. The Libertarians and non-Repubs that run on the repub ticket spread the votes so conservatives and good candidates are eliminated - which is what the GOPe wants.
Ain’t that the truth.
Mary and Jim earned their millions and are now irrelevant.
They milked millions and did nothing for the Republican Party. Good go help the libertarians except they don’t pay
Trump is conservative. He is just returning the Republican party back to is protectionist, nationalistic and patriotic roots.
I am of the opinion that there is a fight for the soul of the Republican party. Conservatives represent roughly 20% of the party and is growing, but they are not the ones in power. The GOPe also represent roughly 20% but are shrinking, however, they are the ones in power.
Trump has tapped into the 40% of the party that is just pissed and want the Dems kicked to the curb. The remaining 20% are single issue voter and tend to not be organized into a group.
Now what this means is that the GOP party is coming to a pivot point. Remember that delegates vote on more than just the nominee. They set the rules for the next election cycle and the party platform gets set, etc. That is why it is STILL important to grab as many conservative delegates as possible.
With enough conservatives as delegates, the GOPe will be pushed out of the party power tree. If Trump wins the general AND GOVERNS as a conservative, we can expect two terms. That means the GOPe will be out of power for 8 years. This will be very bad for those PACs, pundits and lobbyists who have built their Rolodex around the GOPe. This will require a realignment of PACs and politicians. Different interests come into play.
Basically the Uniparty loses a wing and gains a true opposition.
