How Ryan decided to ditch Trump
Politico ^ | May 5, 2016 | Jake Sherman

Posted on 05/06/2016 1:18:29 AM PDT by reaganaut1

On Wednesday morning, not even 24 hours after Donald Trump effectively clinched the Republican nomination, Paul Ryan convened his top advisers for a call. With Congress out of session, Ryan was bouncing between multiple states, raising the piles of money needed to keep House Republicans in the majority.

But Donald Trump was on his mind. The speaker could not — at least at this point — support him. And he wanted to talk through how to proceed.

Ryan never expected Trump to lock up the nomination so quickly. He didn't think Texas Sen. Ted Cruz would drop out of the race in May. In fact, Ryan's orbit was preparing for a contested convention in Cleveland, where he is slated to serve as chairman, effectively the emcee of the Trump coronation.

The decision was made quickly. The next day, he would go on CNN and make it official, in no uncertain terms.

“I think what a lot of Republicans want to see is that we have a standard-bearer that bears our standards,” he told Jake Tapper in the bombshell interview that was taped shortly before it aired on Thursday afternoon.

“I think conservatives want to know, does he share our values and our principles on limited government, the proper role of the executive, adherence to the Constitution?” Ryan added. “There are lots of questions that conservatives, I think, are gonna want answers to, myself included. I want to be a part of this unifying process. I want to help to unify this party.”

Another member of the "Galactically Stupid Club". What self-professed conservative Republican would EVER contemplate voting Dem? Someone is really going to have to explain the logic processes swirling around in a brain that formulates this as a good idea.

May I suggest, BagBoy, if you insist on making some infantile and selfish gesture at the polls, that you either spoil your ballot or stay home. At least this gives the loyal remainder a fighting chance.

I think Rince Pribus should make a call and tell him, he endorses Trump OR someone else will chair the convention.

IF, as many of us strongly suspect, Ryan expects to be crowned at the convention after they suddenly change the rules and make the convention wide open, he won’t care about losing his seat in Congress.

I know the pro-Cruz delegates coming from the 3rd District in Georgia and their Alternates. They are Cruz supporters, but would never put up with a Ryan putsch. The top vote getter's brother was a delegate last time, and he withheld his vote after he was not allowed to vote for anyone other than Romney (he was supposed to be a Ron Paul delegate).

I believe they are representative of pro-Cruz delegates throughout the country, who combined with the Trump supporters, EASILY form a majority. With 17 candidates, we got to see home many are really Establishment voters. The answer is about 25% at most (John Ellis Bush and Rubio being the bulk).

So you're a member of the Asshat club. Good to know.

Negotiate, much? Didn't think so.
Read "The Art of the Deal"? Didn't think so.

You claim to support Trump, yet you don't have a clue how to negotiate or think outside the box. The only thing politicians care about, including Ryan, is saving their own jobs. Threatening to remove them (and their cronies) from office with out votes is the only leverage we have at our level, as peon voters. Politicians don't care about people unless we flood them with calls, emails, faxes, and letters on certain issues. Then they suddenly care, because they are afraid they will lose votes, and lose their jobs.

Save your insults for the Democrats. You and I are supposed to be on the same side, remember? Wise the F up and catch a clue, Engineer.

Well, I predict that this fact will make a huge difference in Ryan’s attempted dustup with Trump.

The most voters in GOP history are going to put Donald Trump well over the top as the nominee. The most voters to EVER vote for any individual through the GOP Presidential Primary for president.

And they did in a field of 17 candidates.

Think about that.

There is a message being sent loud and clear and Ryan better heed it, or his opponent in his own GOP Primary who is proudly stating he will support Trump, may well upend the new speaker.

You better complete the sentiment, DemBag, what about #NeverBernie?

It didn't take much comprehension to read your proposed post-card saying, "Ryan, unless you do what I want you to do, I'm going to have a hissy fit and Vote Dem all the way down the down-ballot."

Infant.

Of course. That's why he's being greeted with open arms.

I suspect in your case, a sarc tag might be necessary.

Truce! How about this suggested revision for your postcard campaign to Ryan:

So it's #NeverTrump is it Paul?
How about we make it #NeverRyan?
How about we make it #VotePaulNehlen?

I think this would be scarier to Ryan than your Dem thing.

No hard feelings. Go Trump!

Ryan wants to know if Trump meets THEIR standards? They're the House of REPRESENTATIVES, for heaven's sake! They're supposed to represent OUR standards!

Do they think Trump won the nomination because we approve of their performance? To tell them so?

Good luck with that!
