Trump says he’ll name running mate at convention

Donald Trump said Thursday that he will name his vice presidential pick at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this July.

Speaking in an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said that it was still early in the process to select a running mate, but that he would soon form a committee to begin vetting running mates.

“It is early — we just won yesterday,” Trump said. “I will announce it at the convention. A lot of people are interested.”

Trump has said he intends to pick a Republican with prior government experience.

Trump has not yet reached the number of delegates required to clinch the nomination, but now has a clear path to becoming the Republican standard-bearer after his remaining rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, suspended their campaigns this week.

Keep going. Theodore Roosevelt screwed William Howard Taft in 1912 even if it meant getting Socialist Woodrow Wilson into the Presidency. Ditto 1952 when the party establishment pulled out all the stops to keep President Taft’s son, Conservative Sen. Robert Taft, Sr., from getting the nomination.

I’d like to see Col Allen West as his pick. He brings a lot of what Trump needs, and what America needs.

Agree. I think West would be better as SecDef, though. He would push to rebuild our military strengths that Obama and his milquetoast SecDefs have destroyed.

I saw another thread mentioning Rand Paul, and get the feeling that’s who it will be. Senator Paul made some derogatory comment about Mr. Trump during the primary, but I think he could shake it off pretty easily. I don’t even remember what he said. But Senator Paul might not want the job. I don’t think he’d ever be president himself without 8 years as Trump’s apprentice though.

The problem with Sessions as VP is that he’s needed in the US Senate.

Some FReepers were giddy at the mention of Tulsi Gabbard being a potential VP nominee on a prior thread. Strange times when Gabbard is lauded, and Ted Cruz is vilified.

Her being "not guilty" - as the saying goes - gets them interested, and her remarks about a handful of Dem sacred cows adds some substance for a second or two, but with the possible exception of those who believe military service automatically confers political streadfastness, any support for her has to be superficial at best.

Webb is not a republican.

That could change.

Didn't it change once already?

Yes, focus on delegates. But if he sits down with the GOPe, and they insist he takes one of theirs as a VP to unite the party, I’d insist on Susana Martinez. I’d think she’d go along with some arm twisting.

Other names to consider:

LePage - Gov of ME
Joni Enrst - Iowa Sen.
Mike Lee - UT Sen.
Ron Johnson WI Sen.
Mary Fallin - Gov of OK.

just a few off the top of my head.

I really like Allen West, but I still say he needs to pick a conservative black woman to put him over the top. Condi Rice or Alveda King.

““Trump’s VP pick will be Jim Webb.”

Interesting pick. I watched Webb in the Dem debates and concluded he was more conservative than all but a small handful of the original 17 GOP opponents.”

Are you guys out of your freaking mind! As my former senator he voted with the democratic majority 99.5% of the time, including supporting Obama Care and the financial rape of our country. He never responds to emails, phone calls, or letters. Not even a thank you.

You might as well keep Biden!

That takes the air our of this media discussion and he can focus on getting the delegates.

Well he was good enough for President Reagan. You might try reading his books starting with “Fields of Fire,” “A Sense of Honor,” or “A Country Such as This.” This is the Webb Reagan and I know. (Especially “A Sense of Honor.”)

“If an unstable creep like...” Wrong thread Cruz already withdrew from the race! Point was SaxxonWoods had the crux of an interesting idea.....as I said below....

“Not saying yea, but interesting”

Maybe you need to read the whole post before running off to the races.....

The point was in the last sentence of my original post.......I think Trump won’t be influenced by labels, but rather by substance and a demonstrated ability to get things done, rather than just spout ideologically “pure” words.....

I can take Alveda. I like Condi, but she hates politics, and of course, they would consider her an ‘insider’.

Yeah, well some of us remember Newt screwing his allies back when he was Speaker. That’s why he lost the position in the first place. That’s what I mean by loose cannon. Newt put Newt’s interests first.

I hear you. My suggestion for Trump is use Newt in more of a background fashion. Maybe extensively but mostly on the QT.

thanks for the info. it’s one thing i love about FR, namely, folks on the ground who can provide first hand information. you see, i was going solely on Webb’s “performance” during the debates.

We got similar information from my wife’s sister who lives in Texas regarding Cruz back when we bought into Cruz’s carefully constructed persona early in the primary. Her sister didn’t like him at all, and turns out, given Cruz’s subsequent behavior in the primaries, she was correct.

>> Well he was good enough for President Reagan. <<

So what? By the same logic, John McCain was "good enough for President Reagan". In 1986, Reagan proudly endorsed McCain's first bid for the U.S. Senate and ran a TV ad for him. People show their true colors later on.

>> You might try reading his books <<

You mean like the one where a father performs oral sex on his son and the rest of the characters in his fictional book don't bat an eyelash ? Unlike you, the vast majority of freepers were rightfully disgusted by Webb's vile imagination.

>> “If an unstable creep like...” Wrong thread Cruz already withdrew from the race! <<

Wrong thread, George Allen already lost, no need to pimp the DNC's handpicked candidate as a "patriotic, honorable Dem". Good thing its 2016 and not 2006. If you had posted that during the Senate race, you would have been rightfully zotted from this forum.

>> a demonstrated ability to get things done, rather than just spout ideologically “pure” words..... <<

Virginia FReepers would certainly disagree with you, they attributed Webb's win to liberal RATs in northern virginia who don't believe in Virginia values, rather than Webb being an "old fashioned conservative Democrat country boy who gets things done and looks out for veterans"

Wow do you always take things out of context to win some non-issue argument?

“You mean like the one where a father performs oral sex....”

So you have read his books? The above “oral sex” wasn’t ever in any of his books......you know that or have just not ever read any of them.

I wrote speaking of Trump and his criteria for a VP selection...>> a demonstrated ability to get things done, rather than just spout ideologically “pure” words..... <<

You wrote....”Virginia FReepers would certainly disagree with you,”

Not surprising that Va. FReepers like you do not support Trump. Cruz much? Trump, despite your non-support, will turn out to be a better than average president. I hope better than that, but above average would be OK for anyone to say for now.

End of discussion.
