As a 5th generation Republican and Lifelong Conservative the political events of recent years have been frustrating. None are more frustrating than this election cycle.
We prayed and hoped for a real Conservative to counter the leftward pull of Obama. We wanted someone to pull the country to the right so we could possibly be, at least, center America, where we typically like to land in national politics.
We have had several Conservative candidates this cycle, but many who have called themselves "Conservative" have coalesced behind a man who is the farthest thing from Conservative as is imaginable and why? Because of FEAR.
Fear of the other, fear of violence, fear of immigrants. These are valid fears, but when fear turns to hate judgement is clouded. That is what has happened. Instead of standing by principles, "Conservatives" have been drawn to hateful rhetoric. Even after Trump has disavowed his own rhetoric to the NYT& others, the seed has been planted. If one wonders how despots rise to power, this is how. Exactly.
Trump's positions are all Liberal/Leftwing, some experts speculate Neo- Proto- or Ur-Fascist as well . He did not magically become Conservative and he has given ample evidence of this---repeatedly. But the fearful will not or cannot hear it.
If Trump is the nominee which Liberal will I choose? I choose Hillary and will, for the first time in my life, vote for a Democrat for president. Why? Because if Trump wins, pretending to be Conservative, he will destroy Conservatism for 20 yrs. He is not pulling down-ticket Conservatives so his administration would be Liberal to the max.
It is a difficult choice but I am absolutely convinced it is the correct choice. If I have to vote Liberal, I vote strategically Liberal.
No idea what you are talking about. Wrong poster?
Say hello to Cincinatus’ Wife for us.
Excellent post.
I like the idea of knotty pine in the kitchen! In my area there are a lot of beautiful beetle-kill pine cabinets, walls and ceilings.
Related to the other subject:
A story about government and leader-dependence. People get too tied up in the Presidency. I had a cousin who worked in the bowels of the Labor Dept in DC. He was a liberal Dem of course. When Reagan was elected I asked him what he thought as he had been trashing R throughout the campaign. He laughed. “Presidents come and go, we are always here. And we do 90% of what really gets done.”
Did a biddy step on your head?
“Please be honest. Lets start with honesty. Trump has done much more good in his lifetime than supporting Dem and Rep shysters. You write as if thats the ONLY thing Trump has done.
Come on.”
To many long time Republicans it is impossible to believe that the party would nominate someone who gave money to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Hillary Clinton.
It is impossible to believe that the party would nominate someone who less than three years ago gave $ 25,000 to Terry McAuliffe who won the governor’s race in Virginia 47 - 45 % with 6 % voting libertarian. That election we needed every hand on deck, and Trump was supporting the Democrat. Now he just made 200,000 felons voters. Wouldn’t it be ironic if those felon votes kept the state from Trump.
So yes, for people who have volunteered for the party for 40 years, supporting candidates they loved, liked, and even disliked, it is going to be hard to accept that the party is nominating someone who has been working against them so many times.
Something Trump is proud of is bringing many non-voters into the process. Those supporters probably don’t sympathize with the long time Republican very much. The first reaction is probably just to hurl more insults. After all, it seems to work for Trump. At this point I don’t think the insults are helping him any because now that the primaries are decided, it’s up to Trump to unify the party.
“We will win without you, and rest assured we will WIN.”
That I can tell you.
Brevity is the soul of opus.
They just can't blackmail the rest of us into giving two wet sneezes either way, is all.
Which one?
With all due respect, somewhere there is a pooch feeling very screwed.
Last time I checked, Trump was not being investigated for numerous national security violations. If you are an American that supports the rule of law, you cannot vote for Hillary.
LOLOL!!!
The first one. That one was my personal fave.
No man show go out showing such stupidity... So I fixed it for you.
LOL! Too many years exposure to Governor Moonbeam, no doubt...
You are the hater, not Trump supporters. I feel sorry for you. Voting for Hitlerly is cutting off your nose to spite your face. That takes a lot of hate.
You don’t even have a clue about what the election is about as far as conservativism goes. It is about globalism and the loss of National sovereignty. The social and economic ideology of globalism is far from conservative.
You are a liar and probably have some deep, twisted desire to vote for a radical liberal. Seek help.
You remind me of Alexander Hamilton who said: If we must have an enemy at the head of Government, let it be one whom we can oppose, and for whom we are not responsible, who will not involve our party in the disgrace of his foolish and bad measures.
That is soooo old school.
Today the smart conservatives - the ones in New York City - advise us that when Democrats run a liberal for president, Republicans need to run a candidate that is even more liberal.
What could go wrong with that?
Written by a person not unlike Jeb or George Bush claiming they are consrtvatives.
Why write an opus, no one cares why you’re going, just go.
They never thought theyd have to vote for someone as vulgar as Trump...
