The final rebuke of Donald Trump

How the #NeverTrump crowd can cripple his presidency

Donald Trump has a shot at reconfiguring the electoral map — putting traditionally blue states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin into play, with his working-class, industrial appeal. He’s going to need the support of the #NeverTrump crowd in the nation’s suburbs.

According to the Atlantic, Mr. Trump could win the Rust belt states — without improving on any other demographic — by holding his opponent to less of the working-class white vote than any Democrat has won since 1988. Yes, that’s a narrow path, but given Mr. Trump’s potential appeal to new and crossover voters — and a general lack of enthusiasm for Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy among Democrats — it’s plausible.

“In Iowa, if all else remained constant, [Trump] could win if he held the Democratic nominee to 47 percent or less of the vote among working-class whites, not much different from the party’s recent low point of 48 percent in 2004,” The Atlantic reported. “In Ohio, Trump could win by pushing the Democrat even slightly below the recent low point of 40 percent that [President Barack] Obama notched in 2012.”

Overall, if Mr. Trump were to capture 65 percent or more of the white vote, he would win the nomination, pollsters say. In 2012 Mitt Romney won 59 percent.

====================================

The first step in turning Mr. Trump’s numbers around is for Party elites to finally coalesce around Mr. Trump, Mr. Olsen said. For example, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s endorsement could move the needle in Wisconsin, and John Kasich’s support could solidify Mr. Trump’s numbers in Pennsylvania and Ohio. So far both men have been solidly anti-Trump.

The #NeverTrump movement may not be strong enough to deny Mr. Trump the nomination, but it is strong enough to deny him the presidency.

Trump has said he wants someone with Congressional experience to help guide his agenda.

I’m not advocating for Rubio as VP; We voted for Trump in Florida. But it could be the price the GOP puts on their money and GOTV machine.

Kinda like William Safire telling readers to “hold your nose” and vote for Clinton in 1992 to teach Bush a lesson. Did not quite work out as planned....

I understand you aren’t advocating for Rubio.

I’m just saying, that if there’s another way, there’s probably a better VP pick out there. Let’s not sell/buy too soon.

“Let’s not sell/buy too soon.”

I agree for sure. As Trump has said, there are many people throwing their support to him behind the scenes. A month is a lifetime in politics.

Think about this if Trump:
1. Stops illegal immigration
2. Stops the massive influx of Muslims
3. Reforms the tax code
4. Gets the national concealed carry passed
5. repeals ObamaCare and replaces it with the proposal on his website
6. balances the budget through the elimination of waste
7. Returns education to the local level
8. reforms Veterans Benefits

Out of these 3, 4, and 5 are clearly outside the scope of the Presidency. (All legislative power belongs to the congress.)
6, 7, and 8 are a bit murky (I think they’d entail legislative action, to be accepted as legit) but much of this could be handled with a “this ain’t in the Constitution; it’s out!” approach.

Then you will either vote for Hillary or sit out and let her win!

I’m reading ‘1940’ by Susan Dunn and you are correct . . . the republicans of that era were surprisingly pro-Germany and progressive in their views. It even tells of Wilke who was an R but totally D - but he was against the KKK.

Gerald Ford was part of an anti-armament society that was against any intervention in Europe. Some of the anti-semetics of the day were Henry Ford and the president of GM motors.

A big pro-Hitler R was Charles Lindburgh.

It should be noted though that many sentiments changed drastically on December 7, 1941.

So, then you’re okay with the Dems stacking the Supreme Court for a generation, the nullification of the 2nd Amendment, and the likely destruction of the Republic?

Well, to be fair it's not like the Republican party has a good record on Supreme Court Justices either — personally, I think one of the big problems is that there's no non-lawyers on the high court. (Formal legal training seems to be teaching that the Constitution isn't supreme law, instead focusing on precedent and USSC rulings. [one link])

They still positions advocated by Donald Trump and are the center piece of his campaign. None of them are issues that a “progressive” would take

What’s your point?

That President Trump can’t get them done?

He can because the American people want them, and he’ll entice, or beat, the people who can do it into submission.

“I can never vote for liberals, progressives or communists. That means no democrat will ever get my vote. Trump is clearly a progressive. Remember, the progressive movement started in the republican party.”

That kind of sentiment made some sense when Cruz was a viable alternative. If one believed it to be the case, one could legitimately make the argument that Cruz was the only conservative in the race, so it was Cruz or nobody. #neverAnybodyElse.

But now that you know that Cruz is not winning the nomination, and that Trump is, clinging to that #neverAnybodyElsebutCruz position (#neverTrump) is just pure unvarnished stubbornness - the worst kind of “cut off your nose to spite your face” stubbornness.

Some of the #CruzOnly people who used to seem reasoned and principled, have morphed into the most unreasonable and unhinged.

It’s not too late to break the spell - wear a garlic necklace or something.

My gut thoughts on something don’t mean they are right.

Trump has an unusual ability to appeal to people across demographic lines.

I think he connects with the rank and file better than anyone we’ve seen in our lifetime.

It will be interesting to see if this is born out in the next six months.

IMO it will be.

I don’t know if Donald, Jr., is eligible. I think his mother was not a U.S. citizen when the first three children were born. (Not sure — something I read here on FR a while back.) I absolutely love him, though!
