As voters in five different states headed to the primary polls today, there is another unlikely alliance, of sorts, forming.
Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner who has expressed empathy for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, is offering him some unsolicited advice.
"Bernie Sanders has been treated terribly by the Democrats both with delegates & otherwise," Trump tweeted this afternoon. "He should show them all, and run as an Independent!"
Sanders has run as an independent for most of his political career and is the longest-serving independent in congressional history. But he joined the Democratic Party to run for president and his campaign manager told Bloomberg News that Sanders would be a Democrat for life.
Though Sanders and Trump's views are vastly different, these two populist stars do have a few similarities. For one, they have enjoyed some of the largest crowd sizes of any presidential candidate. And Trump has likened their candidacies, comparing the struggle he says both men face.
"This is a crooked system, Trump said earlier this month in Rochester, New York. Im not a fan of Bernie. I couldnt care less. As far as Im concerned, I couldnt care less about Bernie. But he wins. And he wins. Like me.
Trump has decried the primary system in both parties, calling them rigged, accusing the votes of being in the hands of the delegates not the people.

I saw Trump tweet this earlier today. Encouraging Sanders to go independent is a brilliant move—it would suck voters away from Hillary.
Go Bernie, go! I would even contribute to his campaign.
All Bernie could do is siphon voters from Hillary.
they are the same anyway, Hilly has taken all of Bernie’s socialist positions away from him! lol
Go Bernie, go!! I’ll send you a couple of bucks.
YES ..... I definitely encourage and support Bernie running as an independent!!! He needs to do it for the Good of America! Go Bernie GO!
Absolutely brilliant
He is forcing people into camps, not sure what his is but there it is
Good ‘ole Bern said he won’t do that and cost the witch the election.
I have thought since 2012 that a re-run of 1860 was a possibility for 2016 - both “major” parties split and unable to come to consensus, with two Democrats, one Republican, and a “can’t we all just get along” Republican-Democrat fusion ticket competing for votes, with the eventual President-elect under 40% of the vote.
Not sure about the 600 000 dead and 1/3 of the nation in ruins - but it’s not impossible.
Sanders will go further than Hillary, plus his zombie followers won’t die easily.
I am not a Trump guy but I give credit where credit is due.
Trump is a Charismatic, Bernie is a Charismatic, Obama is a Charismatic.
Color me skeptical.
Trump should drop some cash for a Bernie run. Excellent investment. Trump could urge all his supporters to donate to Bernie.
Trump just moved into Bernie supporters heads. They are now thinking about him
For a winner this guy whines a lot about the rigged system.
It bugs me.
Bank on it anyway - once Hillary gets the nomination, the youngsters for Bernie will take to the streets. The Democratic convention will be like 1968 in Chicago with riots. Bernie just may run as 3rd party anyway without anyone suggesting.
Donald is learning to play politics!
I wouldnt go that far.....
What’s great about this “split vote” thing is that in the lives of the current politicians on the side of the enemy (Liberals), they have NO experience on how to handle a split vote.
They would be decimated ! I think that if Bernie ran on an independent ticket, it would be the end of the Democratic party.
And if it’s timed with the end of the RINO-drenched GOP that would be the best possible outcome.
But we all KNOW that democrats eat their own. Look at Joe Leiberman for proof of that. If anyone steps off the Democratic plantation, they may -seriously- be killed.
You don’t tangle with Killary. And you don’t tangle with Debbie wassername-slutz either.
At some point Clinton will make an offer Sanders can’t refuse....
Be my V.P.....you can lead on breaking up Wall Street....
I’d put money on it....
