My local congressional district became one of those battlegrounds that we see playing out across the country, as Ted Cruz supporters outflank Donald Trump backers at the little-known, little-attended Republican Party meetings to select delegates to the national convention. Here's one delegate's story of how it all went down.
Q: Who won the district? If Trump won it, why didn't pro-Trump delegates win at the meeting?
A: The primary dictates how the delegates are to vote on the first ballot. It doesn't dictate who the people are that are elected to represent the convention body at the RNC.
Q: Did any Trump supporters show up? How did they take the results?
A: I would estimate that of all the delegates casting votes, approximately 20% to 25% were Trump supporters. They were understandably upset that their slate did not get approved by the convention body. I spent most of the morning explaining to the leader of their group exactly what was going on and how things were going to move forward. I wanted to make sure they were comfortable with understanding the process.
Q: Why do you think the results went down the way they did?
A: The delegates wanting to support Trump were just late getting involved in the process. I don't think the campaign fully understood how important the actual delegates could be if it came down to a brokered convention. Once it became obvious that the convention may go that route, it was too late to start the process. The delegate process started with mass precinct meetings in February. In February it looked like Trump would easily walk away with the nomination.

Nothing in politics is moral IMO, including, but certainly not limited to, running to tell tales and spreading gossip, all while pointing fingers at the “hypocrites.”
Your next to last statement goes to my point. Candidates don’t win presidential elections on votes alone, or very rarely, especially in a crowded field. They should be aware of this and act accordingly.
Granted, the nominating process needs changing, starting with the order of state primaries. And when there are so many candidates, maybe instead of the current delegate rules, the answer would be doing primary runoffs in the states. Easy to understand.
Although the Republican Party hierarchy is entitled to run it however they see fit, they would be wise to make some changes that the voters can live with.
That assumes I am catholic, and Spanish.
I am actually of German, English, and French descent. All were non catholics to my knowledge.
In fact I am related to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Hence my interest, and knowledge of the times and events.
If one wants to use the rule of law, technically Andrew Jackson took Florida illegally. If one wants to get technical.
“That is the money quote. You are right it is rigged against anyone new to the process.”
Thank you.
Herein lies the misunderstanding: The insiders, GOPe, scoff at the idea of “rigging” because they’ve been at this so long it’s completely normal to them.
To everyone else it’s very sketchy-looking.
Me too, bubba!
German - > Palatinate Anabaptists
English - > From York in 1681
French - > Hueguenot
And for good measure
Scots-Irish - > Settlers in Western North Carolina who started the Regulator Movement, which was the catalyst for the American Revolution.
Hah!
Evil White Anglo-Saxon Protestant AMERICAN, PROUD OF IT.
Just because Don Jr says it does not make it so.
Serious charge — requires proof. So...Where is the proof that Cruz is bribing delegates?
Your link takes me to quite a few “Trump campaign says” stories.
There was one youtube video, which is part of a story I saw on one of the news shows about a week ago. The version I saw was longer than 26 seconds, and the story behind it was something else entirely ... nothing to do with bribing delegates.
If that’s what Don Jr is referring to, he needs something else.
So then you don't vote for that delegate.
I wouldn’t doubt anything about Jeff Roe. He’s a sleeze bag of the higher order.
That's simply not true. Ronald Reagan standing up to the Soviet Union was political - and also moral and the right thing to do. Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was political, and morally right.
You are only tossing out this "everybody does it" mentality to cover up for Cruz and the GOP Establishment's horrible behavior and actions.
Candidates dont win presidential elections on votes alone, or very rarely, especially in a crowded field. They should be aware of this and act accordingly.
Elections (at least they used to be before all this manipulation) were about two basic things: campaigning and getting out the vote.
Trump has outperformed every candidate, in either party, at these functions. You know it, and I know it.
And I agree whole heartily with your last point.
The parties can reform themselves or the people can move on to alternate parties.
Reality can be tough, even tougher when you ignore it.
Please understand .. your doubt is not proof no matter who you believe to be a sleazebag.
It appears there is no proof. Now, Don Jr and the Trump camp may believe whoever it was that sent it to them, but that still doesn’t make it true.
What it appears happened is someone has taken an innocent story - one that was reported on the major news networks - then they edited it in order to offer the “proof” that they needed to make the charge of bribes being paid believable.
Please allow me to clarify...
There is the “game” we call politics...and not many have a favorable opinion of it.
Then there’s policy...
Reagan’s policy was articulated and carried out well.
Obama is a disaster.
RE: GOP rules .. they’ve made it clear that it’s their party and their rules. No, I don’t like it, but can we change it? Not this election cycle anyway.
[IMO] As far as morality, this election cycle has been particularly bad, what with the situational ethics and such. That’s always been the democrats way of doing things, and at the risk of being lambasted, I’ll leave it at that.
My motives may not be what you think they are, but I won’t try to defend myself, because that rarely makes a difference anyway.
You’re right, it’s not really rigged, and Cruz isn’t stealing anything.
Trump’s strategy of calling it ‘rigged’ is working like a charm.
By the way, there is nothing in the rules that says Trump can’t win a bunch of support by saying the system is rigged.
Go Trump!
