Keeping 2.2 million Americans in prison is hurting the economy, President Obama said Saturday in his weekly address, describing a report that outlines those arguments.
The move is part of a federal effort to rally support for an effort by the Obama Administration to reduce the number of people in prison and to help them once they are released. The administration will announce the steps next week during what has been dubbed National Reentry Week, from April 24-28.
This isnt just about what makes economic and practical sense. Its about making sure that we live up to our ideals as a nation, Obama said.
Among the new programs being rolled out, the Obama administration said one will include a plan to help individuals with criminal records compete for federal jobs. The White House said it will also double down on its call for businesses to show favor to the 600,000 people released from prison every year.
"Now, plenty of people should be behind bars. But the reason we have so many more people in prison than any other developed country is not because we have more criminals. It's because we have criminal justice policies, including unfair sentencing laws, that need to be reformed," Obama said.

How about the 94 million of working age Americans who don’t have jobs? How much is that hurting the economy?
Odipshit is one sick SOB.
We have more criminals because of enablers like Hussein Obama.
He is clearly planning a big dump of criminals on us before he leaves office.
You dont go to prison because you are a victim.... you have to earn it.
FYBO
There. I fixed it.
Many countries just kill the law breakers. Low prison population and few repeat offenders.

think of how many new job openings for police officers homicide detectives would be created if we let them all out.
He’s just soooo into pissing off whitey.
Paybacks a bitch and Hussein Baraka and friends have no idea how hard they are going to be hit in retaliation.
These assholes think they are just going to ride off into the sunset scot free.
LOL
People go to the prison because they made poor life choices.
According to Obama, I deserve to be punished for staying out of trouble.
What a dirtbag.
Just what we need more criminals working for the government. Give em all Department of Treasury jobs for sure.
If you don’t believe him you are RAYCISS!!!
Well, OF COURSE it's because we have more criminals!
Maybe a lot of the stuff that lands people in prison shouldn't be crimes, but it's not like the Feds are cruising around the Chicago hoods in paddy wagons and grab people off the street and take them to prison.
So incoming criminals will work with criminals already working for the feds?
He’s right. The communities that raise a disproportionate share of criminals need to (1) stop having children before they are married and employed, (2) start celebrating productive choices and condemning destructive actions, and (3) testify against criminals and then celebrate every time a criminal goes to prison and makes their community safer. I don’t blame the courts, the police, or even the laws for the number of thugs that unwed parents are raising.
No we don't. That's absolute horse shit. For example, by the time a minority person is sent to prison they usually have a dozen or so prior offenses that they did some type of diversion for like probation or what have you and didn't do much or any time at all for. They get off over and over until they have a rap sheet as long as your arm. Ask any DA or prosecutor. The one's that do end up in prison are the one's who are habitual, career criminals and or murderers. We end up with more people in jail because we have more people committing multiple crimes
