The Political Education Of Rafael Cruz

In these speeches, Cruz sometimes admits — with disbelief — that he once supported Fidel Castro’s revolution. “I started speaking at different rotary clubs around Austin, Texas — in favor of Castro! I still thought he was the savior of the country,” he told FreedomWorks, a conservative group, in 2013.

Local news articles and documents from the late 1950s offer a clearer picture of the days of Cruz as a young man, then a believer in the revolution and a visible college activist.

On Jan. 8, 1959, Fidel Castro rode victoriously into Havana. The country’s dictator, Batista, had fled a week earlier. The next day, Rafael Cruz spoke to the Daily Texan, the student newspaper at UT-Austin.

“The July 26 movement was started not by the lower classes but the cultured people of Cuba. People like lawyers, businessmen, men of education. And you know the Communists like to prey on the downtrodden,” said Cruz, conversing freely in his native Spanish.

The July 26 movement is the name of the movement led by Castro that overthrow Batista. The name comes from an attack on the Santiago de Cuba army barracks on July 26, 1953.

Unlike, say, a certain Manhattan real estate magnate?

You’re right. Rudy decided to take the OPPOSITE direction in life and it was very obvious way before he ran for mayor.

I miss Rudy!!

He’s not conservative enough for pres but you committed a misdemeanor and you were in trouble!!

No but no one in this GOP POTUS race is anti-American and, when one is born of at least one American parent, no matter where, one has an American background. Non-American citizenship of the other parent or the accident of location of birth do not disqualify any American. If one is born here to anyone but foreign diplomatic personnel (both parents), one is also a citizen.

The Hildebeast is an NBC but certainly anti-American. BS is also an NBC but anti-American. Obozo is also NBC but anti-American. Heck, being a Demonrat nowadays gives rise to a rebuttable presumption of anti-Americanism.

Many liberal Republicans are NBC and clueless rather than specifically anti-American. Being a jerk is not necessarily being anti-American as is proven by the likes of Feckless Gerald Ford (nee Leslie King), John McCain, and others. Bob Dole was a genuine war hero but also a clueless airhead unfit to be POTUS and, as Jack Kemp memorably labeled him: The Tax Collector for the Welfare State. Those, and not conservatives are screwdrivers used in the vain attempt to drive a nail.

Moral Monster Mitt Romney may or may not be an NBC (in strict Birther terms) depending on the circumstances of his paternal grandparents sojourn in Mexico where his father George was born. According to Birther theology, IF Grandfather and Grandmother Romney intended, by moving to Mexico in a fit of pique over Congress requiring Utah to outlaw polygamy (which Klan Romney did not personally practice) to abandon American citizenship, then Birtherism declares Moral Monster Mitt, born here, with only an American mother to be other than NBC. You can bet George Romney was never "naturalized." Of course, Moral Monster Mitt was bad on everything else and I would presume anti-American to boot.

Obozo "solves issues" like what he perceives as a shortage of undocumented Demonrats, our past coziness with "imperialists" like Winston Churchill, or what he thinks is a reactionary SCOTUS (laugh I thought I'd die!), too much American military power, a military that placed a higher priority on military readiness than on alternative lifestyles, an FBI dangerously believing in actual law enforcement, actual justice as once was sought by the Justice Department, globull warming fantasies, corporations and particularly small businesses thoughtlessly seeking to survive, police enforcing laws, judges sending felons to prisons depriving them of the "right" to vote for Obozo's candidates. You know "issues."

The left has already start doing research on Ted Cruz’s father. Some of it is quite extensive using FOIA requests and they will probably get the information that Cruz has sealed with FOIA requests.

If the Cruz supporters think this is going away anytime soon if he wins, they are living in la la land.

Some articles I’ve read is that it occurred during the time he had left the family in Canada and came back to the Houston area, 1975 timeframe. He attended a relgious service and got saved and gave up his Catholic affiliation. He returned to Canada and brought his family back to Texas. How accurate I have no idea.

Thanks so much. That's more than i had to go on, which was nothing. That would mean ted was 5 yrs old, which is a good age to start telling a child, "You're gonna rule the world one day, son. Jesus told me so." I hope that's an extreme exaggeration, but how would we know? Ted's behavior is totally irrational and bizarre, even if he's being paid off. It's very strange.

Thanks! The thought that the American people — Republicans at that — would make the same mistake made in 2008 with non-vetting a Presidential contender is just beyond depressing!

What I can’t figure out is why this cocaine use hasn’t made more news.

Do you know where the original video is of him saying this?

Sorry, no, I don't know; this thread is the first I've read about it. Most likely it will surface again in a few days.

Both Rafaels raise questions that are not easily answered.

A. Who paved Cruz’s way into Princeton & Harvard? Who paid? Without connections it’s very hard to gain acceptance. He did not come from the typical prep school. Hispanic foreign Canadian status? He hasn’t whined about paying off student loans. Someone had to help Cruz land SCOTUS clerkships. Has there been an invisible hand behind Ted due to his father’s past?... Daddy Bush?

B. Rafael B. Cruz is an interesting character. Most Cubans, especially those his age, express bitter deep hatred and anger towards Fidel Castro. They have family and friends that Fidel imprisoned, tortured or murdered. Repression and communism destroyed their lives. Castro seized all their assets - homes, property, businesses, banks, cars, and personal wealth. They lost their freedom to speak freely, object, assemble, travel, etc... they lost everything and they will curse Castro as long as they live.

The Cubans lucky enough to escape Castro, never went back. Certainly Cruz would have been receiving very negative news back from Cuba from his family and friends. Yet he claims that he returned in 1959.

1) Cruz’s passage to America is odd. It only makes sense that he was very pro-Castro and sent specifically to Texas to live among other Cuban communist exile students. If Cruz had been protesting in Miami, his life would have been cut short. Para-military groups were training in the Florida Everglades with plans to overthrow Castro and liberate Cuba. Omega 66 and other factions would have eliminated Cruz.

2) Aliases. His explanation for dropping his family name tied to his Spanish heritage is not so common.

3) How does a foreign teenager get immediate acceptance to a Texas University? Who pays the tuition, room & board? How did he get from Key West to Texas? Someone made lots of arrangements for Cruz.

4) Cruz speaks Spanish, how does he complete university level studies and graduate in four years.

5) What happened to Cruz’s family in Cuba- parents, siblings, cousins? Did any eventually emigrate?

6) The Cuban community sticks together like glue. Cubans fled to Florida - Miami, Orlando, Tampa. A Cuban teenager alone in Texas is quite the anomaly. One article mentions that there were five Cubans at UT, they must have been planted together, right there, for a reason.

7) Canada. There was lots of oil exploration centered right underneath Cruz’s feet, in Texas. Cruz left Texas for some other reason. (Draft evasion-bigamy-other)

8) Did Rafael resume his seismic-computer career in Texas after he sold his company in Canada.

This ole dog don’t hunt.
