On Thursday, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump took the liberal stance on transgender restroom access. Media outlets can call it "moderate" all they want, but it is inescapable that Trump defended biological men using women's restrooms. The Donald is not exactly hesitant to offend people, and transgressing political correctness has been one of the centerpieces of his campaign. He even declared in the past that he would protect Christians and social conservatives, but this acceptance of "transgender rights" may be a sign that he has started pandering to the "center" for the general election.
Conservatives have long warned that Trump is unpredictable, that he would make a horrible Republican standard bearer because he does not represent the classical issues of that party. Now it seems The Donald might be proving them right -- after most of the socially conservative voters in the South already backed the real estate tycoon.
Trump attacked the North Carolina law which reserved multiple-person restrooms in schools and government facilities to only those people of the appropriate biological sex. This law was intended to protect the privacy of girls and boys, men and women, but many companies attacked it as discriminatory. Rather than defending the law -- as those who find The Donald a champion of conservative or politically incorrect values might expect -- Trump trashed it.
"North Carolina did something that was very strong and they're paying a big price and there's a lot of problems," said Trump, who would have left things as they were. "There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble."
This stance sounds moderate -- Trump is arguing that there should be no restrictions -- but in reality, it is a complete surrender to a small, vocal minority. If public restrooms must be one way or the other, why side with the infinitesimal minority of people who identify with the sex opposite the one they were born with, rather than the millions of men and women who are comfortable with their birth sex?
Why can we not have more single-serve, unisex restrooms, to avoid the issue entirely? Trump attacked the idea of separate transgender restrooms as a waste of money -- he's right -- but he did not address this solution, which many restaurants have already adopted.
In matter of fact, Trump is incorrect that there has been "so little trouble." Women who claim to have been abused as children are now vehemently opposing the opening of girls' and women's restrooms to biological men. When the New York Times attacked Americans concerned about this issue as effectively insane, controlled by "transgender bathroom hysteria," these disenfranchised people took to Twitter to express their outrage. Regardless of what Trump or the New York Times says, many Americans are concerned about this, and it's not just because of "transphobia."
Nevertheless, The Donald was quite explicit in his support for transgender access. He said that if Caitlyn Jenner (born Bruce Jenner) walked into Trump Tower, The Donald would let her use the restroom of her choice.
If @Caitlyn_Jenner walked into Trump Tower, what bathroom would @RealDonaldTrump suggest she use? #TrumpTODAY https://t.co/E6jLyif6ls

The Federalist's Ben Domenech once explained why social conservatives in the South might back Donald Trump. Domenech said these voters "have no illusions about [Trump's] unbelief. The difference is that while they believe Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio would be one more round of good soldiers for their cause, they think Donald Trump would be a tank."
But when it comes to actually fighting for conservative values, Trump ends up on the other side. Indeed, in a classic battle involving political correctness, he falls neatly in line. The Donald might not be a tank, but rather a Trojan horse.
I think Trump was ignorant of what the North Carolina state legislature was doing with their bill. They were trying to put the rules back to their original position before the city of Charlotte violated state law. The North Carolina legislature undid an illegal law in Charlotte that forced businesses to allow men into womens bathrooms based only on their identity (not the way they were dressed). The law in North Carolina was that it was illegal for men to enter into womens bathrooms and Charlotte violated State law by forcing businesses to ignore the state law. The Legislature then passed a law prohibiting cities from passing ordinances that violated State law. In effect they did what Trump said they should do, put the law back to the way things were originally. Which is what they did.
Trump really did not say anything too far off the mark. People are making mountains out of molehills out of his lack of knowledge of the situation in North Carolina. His comment about Caitlyn Jenner may have thrown everyone a curve. If he knows something about Jenner that we don’t know—that Jenner did have the total transformation—I can see where Jenner could go into a woman’s restroom or shower. I think Jenner could have spared the headaches with some psychological counseling and not go transgender in the first place.
Your post shows great wisdom.
We do have laws on the books for voyeurism and exhibitionism. Those who violate such laws get categorized as sexual offenders. With that on their record, their job prospects are not favorable.
The key issue is that we are not electing a President to deal with social issues, since he doesn't have the power to do so.
There are so many NON-ISSUEs as you say that need to settled amicably so we can move on.
Reminds of the issue of the Confederate flag issue flying from a public building. No matter what decision you make, somebody is going to get upset.
For the Confederate flag, Trump said, "let the flag be shown in a museum somewhere." And it was a good comment that respected the Southern heritage but also appeased the many blacks who are offended.
This article is a lie. I posted a vanity explaining Trumps position.
You posted a vanity projecting your hopes on Donald Trump. Today will be Trump’s walk back day. Everything he actually said will be disected and “clarified” to calm the masses.
Then what can Trump or Cruz do about it other than grandstand
Pound their chest?
In another thread on this same subject, you said: ...If I cant tell a transexual then neither can you. So when the pedophile follows your daughter or grand daughter into the restroom... Your logic escapes me here: how can you make the huge leap from transsexuals to pedophiles? Gays, lesbians, etc. have been on this earth since the time of Christ and before. Chances are that one in twenty or one in ten of the close people in your family is LGBT. And sooner or later we must confront that. And the question becomes: when I meet this person at a family barbeque, what should I do? Should I shun them or treat them like the rest of the family? Can a man explain in words why he is attracted to a woman? Personally, I cannot. And it's probably because this is beyond our sense of reason: sexual attraction is a primal desire, like my need for food, warm, and shelter. So if I don't understand my own sexual attraction to women, how can I understand or criticize the sexual attraction of one adult to another adult? I'm not making light of this. These issues befuddle the brain. But in my own life I've learned that the issues clarify themselves fairly quick when the deviance from "normal" occurs within your own Christian family. |
Wrong - as usual, folks miss the point and twist his word from the common sense they were to the crap they wish he had actually said/meant....It’s coming out but many won’t care because their “Conservative Principles” won’t allow them to see/say the truth.
How can't you? First, they aren't mutually exclusive. Second, the laws guaranteeing a transexual's right to use the bathroom of their choice have no mechanism for actually ensuring that the person using the protection of said law is actually a transexual.
What you have done is to give every pedophile a free hunting license with built in deniability. All they have to do when confronted is say, "I'm transexual and you are violating my rights."
Could you please link to your vanity posting.
I think it would be interesting to read.
Thanks.
Local issue?
But you support Trump who has absolutely no concept of the separation of federal and state powers?
Fascinating.
Reading comprehension problems or just a 3rd graders' grasp of debating skills?
You’re an idiot.
You’re an idiot.
You won’t vote for Cruz because you claim that his father dodged the draft. Love Trump despite he himself dodging the draft. You are a real genius.
That there are exactly two sexes and that they aren't determined by how you feel when you wake up in the morning.
Is that the range of choices that the professional you went to see about your Cruzbonics "issues" listed for you, SimpleMan? LOL! :)
Actually, I've always liked the nickname "stoolSampleMan" for you better, stool. :)
Why even have separate male and female restrooms? What’s the point?
If you are going full delusional, let’s just remove the signs and get on with it.
Gender is now a choice, so along with unisex sports teams, let’s just get rid of all traces of polite society. Hell, it’s only there to protect women anyway, and as even the FR women are now demanding that men share their toilets, let’s just call it a day and open up the locker rooms, dressing rooms, etc. to whoever wants to use them.
It’s time to stop harassing men who feel that they belong with the women when showering, undressing, etc. They aren’t voyeurs or perverts, they are just feeling a bit transexual. A nonissue for sure. Women who aren’t comfortable with this new arrangement should just stay home.
So you are just a straight up idiot. Got it.
