On Thursday, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump took the liberal stance on transgender restroom access. Media outlets can call it "moderate" all they want, but it is inescapable that Trump defended biological men using women's restrooms. The Donald is not exactly hesitant to offend people, and transgressing political correctness has been one of the centerpieces of his campaign. He even declared in the past that he would protect Christians and social conservatives, but this acceptance of "transgender rights" may be a sign that he has started pandering to the "center" for the general election.
Conservatives have long warned that Trump is unpredictable, that he would make a horrible Republican standard bearer because he does not represent the classical issues of that party. Now it seems The Donald might be proving them right -- after most of the socially conservative voters in the South already backed the real estate tycoon.
Trump attacked the North Carolina law which reserved multiple-person restrooms in schools and government facilities to only those people of the appropriate biological sex. This law was intended to protect the privacy of girls and boys, men and women, but many companies attacked it as discriminatory. Rather than defending the law -- as those who find The Donald a champion of conservative or politically incorrect values might expect -- Trump trashed it.
"North Carolina did something that was very strong and they're paying a big price and there's a lot of problems," said Trump, who would have left things as they were. "There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble."
This stance sounds moderate -- Trump is arguing that there should be no restrictions -- but in reality, it is a complete surrender to a small, vocal minority. If public restrooms must be one way or the other, why side with the infinitesimal minority of people who identify with the sex opposite the one they were born with, rather than the millions of men and women who are comfortable with their birth sex?
Why can we not have more single-serve, unisex restrooms, to avoid the issue entirely? Trump attacked the idea of separate transgender restrooms as a waste of money -- he's right -- but he did not address this solution, which many restaurants have already adopted.
In matter of fact, Trump is incorrect that there has been "so little trouble." Women who claim to have been abused as children are now vehemently opposing the opening of girls' and women's restrooms to biological men. When the New York Times attacked Americans concerned about this issue as effectively insane, controlled by "transgender bathroom hysteria," these disenfranchised people took to Twitter to express their outrage. Regardless of what Trump or the New York Times says, many Americans are concerned about this, and it's not just because of "transphobia."
Nevertheless, The Donald was quite explicit in his support for transgender access. He said that if Caitlyn Jenner (born Bruce Jenner) walked into Trump Tower, The Donald would let her use the restroom of her choice.
If @Caitlyn_Jenner walked into Trump Tower, what bathroom would @RealDonaldTrump suggest she use? #TrumpTODAY https://t.co/E6jLyif6ls

The Federalist's Ben Domenech once explained why social conservatives in the South might back Donald Trump. Domenech said these voters "have no illusions about [Trump's] unbelief. The difference is that while they believe Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio would be one more round of good soldiers for their cause, they think Donald Trump would be a tank."
But when it comes to actually fighting for conservative values, Trump ends up on the other side. Indeed, in a classic battle involving political correctness, he falls neatly in line. The Donald might not be a tank, but rather a Trojan horse.
He will do this on issue after issue after issue. It is IMPOSSIBLE to take Trump as a serious thinker in any way.
I”ll vote for him if he’s the R nominee and, as another freeper said, I’ll hope he’ll be a better president that I’ll expect him to be. But I think his candidacy has been a disaster for the R party, the conservative cause and the USA.
I honestly WANT to support Trump....I really do. Then he does a “open mouth and insert foot” thingy. He does it on a regular basis. Then I think...dang this guy is nuts.
I listened to then entire interview this morning on the Today show. My jaw dropped when I heard his comments. Now tonight he “clarifies” them. Of course he clarified them after the internet blew up over this.
So what are we to believe? I heard his words this morning and they were was chilling.
Cruz is currently unelectable. Like I say...I want to support Trump....but GEEZ. I honestly believe he’s just saying what we want to hear to get elected.
My wife and I live near Seattle; we have as many or more “transectuals” here than pretty much any other place in the country. In nearly 60 years neither of us has ever noticed a “transsexual” in a public restroom. I assume that most have to go potty like the rest of us, so either they are not using public restrooms or they are doing it inconspicuously enough that no one notices. That is the definition of a NON-ISSUE. We don't need to pass more laws about NON-ISSUES. If you want to call me a “transsexual activist” go right ahead.
My wife is diabetic and has a bladder control problem from when she was in a bad car accident. She often does not realize she needs to use the toilet until it is a near emergency. Sometimes when the women's bathroom is occupied I have stood by for her while she uses the men's room. If a man comes along I will warn him that she is in the stall in case it will make him feel uncomfortable to use the urinal. I have not had one negative reaction from anyone ever. Does not wanting my wife to be a criminal for using the wrong bathroom make me a “transsexual activist?
Did Trump say that people should use the bathroom they FEEL is appropriate or was that his evil twin?
I also liked Trump at first, but I have no more illusions that Trump is anything other than a blue state liberal, masquerading as a conservative Republican.
Total BS. Anyone who has actually heard what he said knows this is one of the big lies from the Cruz campaign.
Total BS, here is the video, Starts at 16:57 watch it and weep Cruzers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em5o7udaDig
I'm not apologizing for inner Trump, I don't care if it doesn't affect me. And he said the exact right thing, that this kind of crap has not place at the federal level.
Yes, you are a transexual activist.
Any other questions about your Trump support?
Penis, beard... and mentally ill.
Depends on the definition of “feel”....LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Nobody is listening. He's gonna build that wall!
Sounds a little bit like Trump criticism of Pam Geller.
Hey I don’t have to look at you in the mirror in the morning. I can look myself straight in the face and know that I walk my talk and if Cruz comes out in favor of people using the bathroom they FEEL is appropriate I will crapcan him in a heartbeat.
I think Trump’s penchant for being non-PC is a bit overrated. From his condemning of Pamela Gellar for the attempted jihadist attack in TX to his siding with the establishment in SC over the Confederate flag issue to today’s inclination to stand against those who tried to combat the homo-fascists and pervs in NC.
In the end, all I know is that while Trump’s stated populist/nationalist stances are actually MORE in line with my own views than anyone else the GOP trots out, I just don’t “trust” the guy one single inch. And it’s things like this that solidify it.
. If you want to call me a transsexual activist
After acceptance, you must then endorse and after this you must value their perversion and encourage their behavior.
What defines a person as transexual? It is the person themselves choice, correct?
So any man at any time is good walking into public restroom behind a little girl, because you think its a non-issue. And why do you think its a non-issue, because Trump is your hero and he said it was a non-issue.
A man does’t have a right to walk in on women who don’t want them in the same room as them when they are using the toilet.
How does being a Democrat LGBTQLMNOP activist feel? Liberating for you?
Trump has really pulled a lot of Leftists and transexuals out of the closet here at FR. Who knew?
Nope. Trump is an ass:
Peace,
SR
