Donald Trump said Thursday he would change the Republican Party platform's position on abortion to include exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.
Trump made the remarks during a town hall on the "Today" show on NBC on Thursday morning when host Savannah Guthrie asked him about abortion exceptions.
"The Republican platform every four years has a provision that states that the right of the unborn child should not be infringed," Guthrie said. "And it makes no exceptions for rape, for incest, for the life of the mother. Would you want to change the Republican platform to include the (abortion) exceptions that you have?"
"Yes, I would. Yes, I would. Absolutely," Trump said. "For the three exceptions, I would."
Currently, the Republican platform abortion policy reads: "We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

That means that the mother would persecuted as a murderer.
If she killed a one day old child she would be considered a murderer, yet when the issue of punishment of abortion comes up, all of the pro-lifer's flee and claim that they would not punish the mother at all!
So, if you aren't going to treat abortion like murder, stop claiming it is!
If you want to debate Cruz and abortion you would be better off doing that with a Cruz supporter.
Abortion should be to save the life of the mother, when both will not survive and only if the mother wishes it. And saving her life, does not include the embarrassment of an unwanted pregnancy. I mean literal life and death. That is my personal code. Anything else is murder for convenience.
Good grief.
So what would the great constitutionalist lawyer do as President regarding abortion.
I tell you what he could do-nothing!
The abortion issue is a feel good position of the religious zealots who don't have the courage to advocate the punishment for murder for abortion under any circumstances.
You should ask Bill Clinton (potential future White House Resident) that question since he is the one who persuaded Trump to run in the first place.
Unlike you tRumpsters I vote for a President not only because what he is going to “do”, I also vote for someone I can respect. I do not respect, nor will I support for President a socially liberal person, which is what the Donald is. Anyone who thinks that people should be allowed to use whatever bathroom they “feel” like is not a conservative and anyone who supports changing the abortion platform for the Republican party is not a conservative. The Donald supports both of those things.
I do know that Sen. Cruz will not appoint for the Supreme Court a social liberal, which is exactly what Pied Piper tRump will do.
Oh yeah they do but he won’t. Cruz will have a huge problem working with congress even more then trump by far.
I fear the deception will remain with them to the bitter end. Even with all this, they are calling for the zotting of anyone who points out the truth about Trump.
So no one flunked history, you are ignoring the reality of the limits of what a President can do regarding abortion itself.
In other words, all he can do is express his own personal opinion, he can’t do anything legally against it.
See my post #528, which you apparently missed.
Have a nice day!
I am willing to outlaw it as murder and punish the mother who commits it, but when Trump said that, the pro-life group claimed that was never their position!
They just want to use emotional terms like 'life' and 'murder' but not actually punish the mother for killing it.
So, go one way or the other but you can't have it both ways.
The question is, “should murder be illegal?” The answer is yes. Do you believe that an unborn baby is a person? We need to answer this question first. Then, even though the answer may be inconvenient as to what happens when someone kills a person, we must face it.
What do you think should happen? I ask sincerely.
I tend to see killing babies as a black and white issue.
Trump's and Sanders' positions are frighteningly similar.
You are at least being consistent.
Agree. There have been such cases, and the mother often chooses her child. I knew of one such case, and "surprise" the mother also survived, when she was told she would die, if she carried her baby to term. Both mommy and child are perfectly healthy.
Anyone who thinks that they can get elected President in this country by outlawing abortion even in the case of rape, incest, or a threat to the life of the mother is a complete and total idiot.
Women just will not stand for it. Period.
Exactly. The left loves trolling these issues to the right, and the right falls for it over and over again.
It is time to be cold blooded like a Sun Tzu like general - if "issues" are soldiers - some have to be sacrificed so that the main army can advance.
Also, I will add the Republican establishment is using this also to trip up Trump - if Trump was for it the Establishment Republicans would condemn Trump for being inflexible and losing the mainstream vote and not "transitioning" to the middle. If Trump is OK with this then the Establishment attacks him for being "liberal" so he can lose evangelicals.
Trump chose the correct answer - don't go over to the social conservative base which is small and a loser on this issue. Transition over to the middle. Seem moderate. Deprive Hillary of this issue. Sacrifice a small issue to advance the main issue of borders and fair trade.
We are in a war to the death. Our people are under threat of replacement genocide by open borders and unfair trade.
This is a fight to the death. We don't have time for Podunk issues that affect not one person I ever heard of.
I repeat what I wrote before: ou have a greater chance of being killed by an illegal alien than seeing a trans person in a public restroom. You have a greater chance your job is outsourced than seeing a trans person in a bathroom. I live in NYC - in Manhattan no less - and I have never seen one in a public bathroom.
