Donald Trump Just Made It Impossible For Ted Cruz To Clinch The GOP Nomination
Washington Post ^ | 04/21/2016 | Philip Bump

How bad was Cruz’s night? He’s losing to Ben Carson in some places — a guy who hasn’t been in the race in weeks.

Cruz can still win the nomination on the first convention ballot, mind you, but he needs to win about 88.5 percent of the outstanding delegates, bound or unbound, per Daniel Nichanian’s excellent calculations. That's not likely to happen either.

Trump isn’t the only big winner tonight! Congratulations to John Kasich, who will almost certainly end up with his first delegate in more than a month. Can Kasich pull off a come-from-behind victory? No. The end.

Ted Cruz got mathematically eliminated in New York - and he lost not to Donald Trump there but to Ben Carson!

He'd have to win 89% of the remaining delegates to secure the nomination in Cleveland. Trump only needs to win 56% to do it. Kasich? He's never gonna get there.

I guess he should just drop out then; after all, 72% of Republican voters don’t want him to be the nominee.

Did you hear the double speak out of Cruz claiming he has been winning elections in landslides. He is talking about the delegate election process, not the actually voting process. Cruz sounded terrible in that interview with Hannity.

Only 15% of NY voters wanted Cruz as the nominee.

And he came in a distant third... oops, a distant fourth behind Ben Carson and didn’t win a single county.

Yet there is this little thing about the delegates.

If you can’t win ‘em, spin ‘em!

It’s the American way!

Let’s be generous and give Cruz IN, MT, NB, OR and WA.

Is it gonna be enough? NO!

Trump takes WVA, NJ and CA. So there.

Or steal ‘em.

Possible Cruz could pull that off. Right now its his only chance.

Cruz can deprive Trump of a majority but he can’t win outright.

It’s probably worse than that. Only 15% of Republicans in NY chose Cruz. That is only 5% of NY voters overall. And Cruz would never get any Reagan Democrats crossing over, where Trump would.

Sure but what do you say about a candidate who can’t carry one county in New York?

No GOP candidate except Trump stands a chance there in November and Cruz’s prospects are scarcely any brighter in the rest of the Northeast next week.

It was a closed primary.

Trump could win New York in November with the help of crossover Independents and blue-collar Democrats.

Hillary’s big win was masked by her inability to carry any place in New York outside of the big urban centers.

Sanders won all the upstate counties and collar counties around NYC.

If I were Hillary, that’s cause for concern.

I just know that Donald Trump is evil. National Review says so. They say he’s a “Fuhrer,” and “Hitler.” In the latest issue, they show that he’s really George Wallace. And they have a cartoon of Trump with a club, dragging a woman by the hair. So I know he’s evil.
