Target Corp. made it clear that transgender people in its stores are welcome to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity.
The statement Tuesday by the Minneapolis-based retailer comes amid debates in many state legislatures over restricting public restroom use to the sex listed on a person’s birth certificate.
While many of those conversations have centered around restrooms in public schools and government buildings, Target appears to be one of the first big-box retailers to take a proactive stance in declaring its position on the matter when it comes to its own restrooms.
While they may not be technically public, restrooms in stores are often the most easily accessible and widely available options outside of people’s homes and workplaces.
Target’s position also extends to its fitting rooms.
“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target,” the company said in a statement on its corporate website. “It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”
Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said it is not a new policy, but the retailer wanted to clarify its position given the questions it has received from both customers and employees amid the national debate. Executives sent e-mail to store leaders earlier this week to convey the message.
“It’s a restatement of a policy,” she said. “It’s just us being very overt in stating it.”

Going full J. C. Penny are they? Locally here in NE FL, Target is a lot like Walmart but more expensive and under utilized I would hope Mrs. Afterguard never encounters a tranny in the ladies head. (Like many here she is always armed.) Too bad if people were to just stop shopping there.
It’s gotten progressively worse over the last few years. Walmarts, Wegmans, Target, all once good stores now awful.
The end of Ladies’ rooms. The inauguration of sexual predation rooms for men. This is Women’s Rights?
Go up to the customer service desk and ask the following question: “I’m a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Which restroom should I use?”
Well many years ago I started keeping a list of all the stores that were declared “off limits” by FReepers.
It didn’t take long to get to “all of them” other than a few places like Chik-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby.
Unless you are a Christian.
I scored a first edition copy of Orwell’s `1984’ at Goodwill.
It smells funny though—the store, not the book. Funky.
I’ll allow any family members to use target. My girls aren’t getting oggled, imposed upon, made uncomfortable, or raped.
I can’t remember the last time I was in a Target. But, it was the last time!
Who goes to the bathroom at Target?
It’s what I would expect these days from a Minnesota based Corporation.
Besides, adults? In Minnesota? Most people there, especially around the Twin Cities, are stuck in junior high.
Wegmans used to be the best IMO of all grocery stores. I haven’t been to one in years, but I’m disappointed to hear them on this list!
Walmart and Target are ghetto....
In the South, we have Publix and Whole Foods that price check the trash for the most part.
The great thing about America’s capitalist system is that Targets customers, shareholders, and vendors get to decide if they want to be tarnished by perverts in Targets restrooms.
And our family’s year-old boycott of Target continues unabated. This despite my visceral hatred of Walmart.
Anyone remember the little girl that was raped by a male teen in the bathroom at a Las Vegas casino some years ago and killed by him?
Who will be held responsible when these become everyday occurrences?
Pretty soon American women won’t even leave their own homes to shop . . . and when we do our men will come with us to guard us . . . and we’ll just throw an old scarf over our heads because men are impatient to get going . . . wait a minute . . . wait a minute . . .
