Republicans Think They’ll Outfox Trump? Think Again
The Daily Beast ^ | 04/18/2016 | Adam Goodman

If there’s one thing Trump knows better than just about anybody, it’s how to make a deal. It’s a skill that’ll come in handy in Cleveland.

As pundits and political prophets focus on deciphering the vagaries of “delegate math” leading into July’s Republican convention in Cleveland—how many delegates do you need, how do you secure them, how do you keep them—stories abound about how the party establishment is plotting to deny Donald Trump the nomination.

The prevailing theory is that the grand poobahs of party discipline will pursue a three-step strategy. First, they’ll use Ted Cruz as their Trojan horse to ensure Trump falls short of the 1,237 delegates needed on the first ballot. Then they’ll pivot to stop Cruz from emerging on the second and third ballots. And finally, they’ll implant their own choice as the consensus unifier—John Kasich or Marco Rubio or Scott Walker, now that Paul Ryan has demurred.

There’s just one little problem with this scenario: Donald Trump gets it. He knows the cabal is laying in wait to use the soon-to-be-infamous rule 40(b)—a nominee must have the majority of voting delegates in at least eight states—to validate the coup despite 16 million voters who by then would have pulled the Trump lever over the others.

Completely wrong.

Cruz won’t do well against any democrat. He is only doing a bit well now, because he is completely threatening the authenticity of the entire GOP primary system.

Cruz will lose BIG, if he somehow manages to be the nominee.

Historically big.

Go Trump.

If they try that kind of chicanery they will be finding out if you can have a political party without voters.

Trump voters are a minority of the party, and only a portion of that minority would go off into the irrelevance of a 3rd-party. I'm not saying it wouldn't have some impact, but nearly as much as the Trumpkins like to envision.

Excellent analysis. With that said, maybe Trump will be the man to deliver the not so good news metaphorically tomorrow, aka "Ted, your Fired"...

Trump is such a genius deal maker yet can’t even figure out the primary system and resorts to cheating claims. If Trump’s IQ matches his verbal skills it is about 85.

Hmmm, seems like you are confused. Trump is a highly successful businessman who has won big in a highly competitive world, and has drawn millions of new voters. Cruz is a slimy sleazebag, who spits on democracy, wants to be awarded the election by party bosses, and repulses every decent person. Cruz supporters must be very proud of their “candidate.”

A really intelligent person can speak simply. Trump doesn’t need to impress people with ten dollar words. That would stand in the way of connecting with people and connecting with people has been essential to Trump’s success in business. It will also be vital to the deal making needed for an effective Trump Presidency

Simplicity of speech is a beneficial approach to life for many reasons not least of all because others underestimate you and then you can get the drop on him/her.

This quote speaks to one of the essential differences between Trump & Cruz.

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” – Stephen Covey

Confident “smack talk”, yes — but only “smack talk”, not accurate future-telling.

I believe differently, and I’m willing to wait and see.

And that is why actually getting your supporters selected as delegates is an important part of the process - one that Trump has ignored until now.

from: RNC Convention ‘Rule 40’ May Have Unexpected, Shocking Result

A similar claim that Trump has reached the magic 8 number is in this WSJ article:

It seems that Trump has met the Rule 40 requirement, as of April 1. Cruz had not. Kasich would have to win all of the delegate in seven of the remaining states.

He’s a Deal maker—a brokered convention will be a piece of cake for Donald Trump. He’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for. You don’t take a million dollars and make it in to 10 Billion by being stupid. Yes, he has a funny accent, strange hair, and a brash New York Style but he will never give up! We needd his leadership skills NOW.

Trump is a very strong candidate. He appeals to a (large) number of people across the spectrum. His appeal is a lot like Reagan’s was.

He is for America.

He is for American jobs. He is for our borders, and our military. He is winning, and you just can’t get, that he is a very strong candidate.

You and the entire GOP establishment, are backing the wrong guy.

Thank you for that articulate, well-reasoned discussion.
When all else fails, ad hominem is such an effective persuasive technique.
I am beginning to believe all those polls that show Trump winning big among the less intellectually capable.

Were you polishing your monocle in the library when you wrote this? What a great intellect you must have. You must be a great self admirer.

Ya think Trump voters are in the minority?
The daily caucus on FR suggests you are wrong, the enormous turnout at rallies throughout the country suggests you are wrong, all the polls where he is ~50% and the other candidates are at ~20% suggests you are wrong but don’t give up hope, pigs can fly sometimes, Right?

So according to the rules, Trump is the only candidate—at this time—who qualifies to be nominated.

Cruz also has a majority of bound delegates from more than 8 states.

Nothing.

What has the GOP done for you the last 30 years?
