Elizabeth Warren thinks the IRS should fill out your tax returns

With Monday’s tax filing deadline looming over many Americans’ weekends, Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s new bill may seem like a godsend.

The Massachusetts Democrat introduced legislation Wednesday that would allow U.S. taxpayers to have the government do their taxes for them—for free.

The conveniently timed “Tax Simplification Act of 2016” would direct the IRS to develop a free, online tax preparation and filing service, using tax information the IRS already has, which Americans could choose to use to have their taxes filed directly with the government, instead of using a third-party service, such as TurboTax.

IRS: “How much did you make last year?”

Taxpayer: “$50,000.

IRS: “Send it in!”

Simple...your paycheck goes directly to the IRS and they give you back what they think you need. The road to serfdom becomes a super highway.

I believe what I read elsewhere was that this would be for relatively simple tax returns, and that people could chose to use or not use this service.

, using tax information the IRS already has,

When they started the 1099 requirement, they thought it would raise tax revenue. If you paid someone over $600 as a part of your business you had to file a l099. If you paid the plumber for you personal house you didn’t.

I had a carpenter that before this had revenues close to $100,000. After this we only got 1099’s showing he made $50,000 as the home owners never filed the 1099.

He filed his tax return based on what the government knew.

Have your employer send your pay to the IRS and they can dole it out to you every week.

Better yet, just have your employer send your paycheck to the IRS and the IRS can pass on to you what they think you deserve.

I have another idea. Have your taxes tied to a customer satisfaction checklist. You pay taxes according to whether the government is doing great in many areas, for instance at holding government expenditures below what they bring in. You pay taxes if you agree with the programs specified on the checklist; that way programs are supported by the people who want them. If my idea is adopted, I'll pay little to no taxes.

In a roundabout way I'm trying to make a point, that the ones making the rules contribute the least, yet are the beneficiaries of the expenditures by government. Taxes are way too high because they're throwing it away on idiotic programs that don't benefit the ones paying most of the taxes (meaning us working stiffs). It would be nice to flip the rules around, so taxes would actually benefit the ones paying the taxes!

I thoroughly agree with you. The problem with government is it has no competition. It monopolizes and corrupts everything it touches. Public education is a perfect example.

The only way we are ever going to change it at this point is the way the founding fathers did it.

I don’t know everything in the bill, but to an extent, it’s probably an obvious, long overdue step. When I receive income, whoever sends it to me also sends it to the federal government. I don’t report any other income. So the stupid ritual of me having to tell the government what they already know is redundant. Occasionally, I’ve forgotten something and they inform me after the fact and readjust my taxes accordingly. It’s just a matter of them getting their data together, and they should be able to provide everyone with a preprinted tax form of everything that they know, of course, then you or your CPA can adjust it based on things that they don’t know.

On the other hand I believe I read that there would also be automatic calculation of certain credits to lower income earners, which would be less revenue than when ignorant people forget or don’t know how to do it.

many times the free services are probably just Fine

i do not use them because they tend to be provided by students or retirees and you still have to gather up all your data before you go there

once you have all your receipts or data all assembled, TurboTax works spectacularly, methinks

at any event, good luck and remember that you do not have to rush this weekend... all you need to do is file for an Automatic Extension. (and remit your estimated taxes due... if any...to avoid having to pay interest later when you do file your completed return)

Best,
fhc
