Elizabeth Warren thinks the IRS should fill out your tax returns

With Monday’s tax filing deadline looming over many Americans’ weekends, Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s new bill may seem like a godsend.

The Massachusetts Democrat introduced legislation Wednesday that would allow U.S. taxpayers to have the government do their taxes for them—for free.

The conveniently timed “Tax Simplification Act of 2016” would direct the IRS to develop a free, online tax preparation and filing service, using tax information the IRS already has, which Americans could choose to use to have their taxes filed directly with the government, instead of using a third-party service, such as TurboTax.

If she had her way, this would be your tax form:

How much did you earn last year $_______

Send it in.

They always call these damn bills a “Tax Simplification Act”, and add another hundred or so pages to the over 42,000 pages of tax law that now exist.
If they want to simplify things, abolish the IRS, get rid of all of the existing tax laws, and go to a flat tax, or national sales tax.

I thought this had been the standard practice for years now. Many are too confused with numbers to prepare their own returns; so they feel compelled to hire it out.

That’s really what’s happening now. The govt gets their cut before you get your “depreciated” paycheck.

They will get all the info on your whereabouts from your car, and your phone. And your credit card company will report everything you spend.

What's wrong with it being a choice? I'd still have the opportunity to correct errors.

My return is complicated enough so that I'm best off having a third party do it, and it isn't cheap. Very rarely does the tax preparer not make an error. The government corrects it because everything is on file.

Free tax preparation, not worry about an audit? That works.

That’s why I’ve never gotten a refund.

A refund only means you gave the Government an interest-free loan.

1. when the income tax was implemented (required a constitutional amendment, at least back then if they wanted to do something in violation of the constitution they amended same... they didn’t just inaguarate an enemy alien agent into the White House, for example)

anyway, sorry I got diverted... but when the income tax was started, the politicians promised the American people that “the American working man will never have to pay a dime in income tax!” (it was pushed through as a leftist “progressive” measure to attack the handful of “fat cats” in the steel and railroad industries)

2. the tax form really did fit on the back of a post card

3. the govt did not confiscate your wages before your taxes were even due (no withholding until during WW2 as a wartime only emergency measure, supposedly)

4. imho, what we need is to eliminate the income tax entirely (it is inherently a major depressant on the economy and jobs, plus any economist can tell you that levying taxes on productivity only stifles, reduces, impedes, discourages productive enterprise and creativity, etc).. as taxes go, an income tax Economically Sucks
more than most

5. and then let the 2 or 3 million people who make their livings doing or processing income taxes... help them find other... PRODUCTIVE stimulating chalenging and well-paid jobs in the Real economy

imho.
finally,
6. we have learned just how a dictatorally-minded President can mis-use the IRS to suppress political discourse and attack political opponents... its been turned into a tool of oppression ... very, very Anti-American

Well, the government is really good at making great (and inexpensive) web sites... the Obamacare website being a good example.

The Sixteenth Amendment is only 30 words, yet look at the tyranny that the big government crowd (both conservative and liberal) are imposing on us from them.

Repeal the 16th amendment. Fund the feral gubmint entirely on a tariff. And no 5,000-page trade agreements. Just a one-page tariff law. Same rate for absolutely all imports.

With all due respect to Sen. Warren, low-information Warren is another excellent example why the ill-conceived 17th Amendment should never have been ratified.

For many citizens, Trump has a much better idea than having the IRS file your taxes for free. Affecting nearly 75 million households, you won’t owe any takes if your income is below the following levels.

"If you are single and earn less than $25,000, or married and jointly earn less than $50,000, you will not owe any income tax.” — Donald J Trump, Tax Reform

Additionally, the unconstitutional IRS should be required to print the following excerpt at the top of every return.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
