Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz is close to ensuring that Donald Trump cannot win the GOP nomination on a second ballot at the partys July convention in Cleveland, scooping up scores of delegates who have pledged to vote for him instead of the front-runner if given the chance.
The push by Cruz means that it is more essential than ever for Trump to clinch the nomination by winning a majority of delegates to avoid a contested and drawn-out convention fight, which Trump seems almost certain to lose.
The GOP race now rests on two cliffhangers: Can Trump lock up the nomination before Cleveland? And if not, can Cruz cobble together enough delegates to win a second convention vote if Trump fails in the first?
Trumps path to amassing the 1,237 delegates he needs to win outright has only gotten narrower after losing to Cruz in Wisconsin and other recent contests, and would require him to perform better in the remaining states than he has to this point.
In addition, based on the delegate selections made by states and territories, Cruz is poised to pick up at least 130 more votes on a second ballot, according to a Washington Post analysis. That tally surpasses 170 delegates under less conservative assumptions a number that could make it impossible for Trump to emerge victorious.

That is not “winning”, that’s “not losing”, and there is a BIG difference.
Cruz did not run the office dummy, the AG did.
I’ll support that, provided Ted Cruz is mathematically capable of getting 1,237 first-ballot delegates in June. But then, he won’t, as of next week.
That depends on how loyal he thinks his delegates and Trump's delegates are. I'd rather have as many loyal Trump/Cruz delegates as possible. If Cruz drops out, around half of his votes will go to Kasich. I do not want a Kasich surge that makes the pro-Amnesty governor look like a legitimate convention choice.
I'd also rather see Trump beat Cruz at the polls and in delegates and earn a first ballot nomination. But Trump is a little shaky on the political campaign process. It's better for him to learn in the primaries so he's as ready as possible for Hillary's corrupt political machine. Cruz creates the need for Trump to build his political skills, and that is a good thing.
Comments like “Sleazy tRump” or “Lyin Ted” are not helpful for electing a pro-gun, anti-AMnesty, anti-Obamacare candidate in November.
Who will benefit if this continues? Hillary, Bernie, Jeb, Rubio, Kasich, and others who consistently support Amnesty, who consistently support Obamacare, and who consistently support restrictions on our individual, God-given right to keep and bear arms.
Decent Americans are better off with a real truce, and not just a Ill stop when every person who even pretends to support the other side stops gesture toward a truce that will never happen.
The nonsense is not helping us to elect the best possible conservative in November. I want 99% or more of Cruz supporters to vote Trump, when he is nominated, even if they hold their noses. In the event that Cruz wins the nomination, I want 99% or more of Trump supporters to vote Cruz, even if they hold their noses. Offending the other side does not encourage them to vote Trump (or Cruz) in November. I cannot help wondering how many of those who stir up the Trump-Cruz wars are actually paid trolls taking Jeb/Hillary/Soros money to cause trouble - not all of them but probably enough to set the toxic tone.
I stand by my recurring statement:
Cruz and Trump are both imperfect but they agree far more than 80% of the time (see my tagline from Ronald Reagan). They should be friends and allies, and we should treat both of them as such.
Cruz got Rubio’s 173 delegates, lowering his magic number.
The only key thing is whether Trump gets to a firm 1237
The answer is this-— Make sure Trump has enough votes to stop these moves—Or trust to Trumps ability as a deal maker to weather this storm. He will come out the winner as he always does.
Nope. Read this. Those delegates HAVE TO VOTE FOR KASIC whether he withdraws or not, according to convention rules.
Well we now know you can spam there ‘lil mac. Good boy!
That is not winning, thats not losing, and there is a BIG difference.
Fine; we’ll just say the Broncos ‘didn’t lose’ the Super Bowl, and leave it at that...still got the rings though, didn’t they...?
All part of the Donald/Hillary DEAL.
We are still the stupid party.
....so true, the SlicksterBubba playbook seen again. Course the real problem is they aren’t the “stupid” party but the Washington Generals, suit up every night and play to lose, but still get all the trappings of power and prestige.... total losers.
ymmv
Cruz creates the need for Trump to build his political skills, and that is a good thing.
Yes, a good point...
Rubio is out as of last night. Rubio essentially endorsed Cruz on Levin’s show.
Kasich has already expressed disdain for Trump.
But no doubt, Trump will be under massive pressure to do a deal with Kasich.
The delegates select the VP , not Trump.
So I have been advocating for the shotgun wedding scenario.
If the VP job was offered either Rubio or Kasich would jump to Trump.
Excellent question......touches on my pet peeve.
Second (or third) place Cruz is now saying: 65,000 people voted in the state of Colorado. They just didnt vote for you Donald Trump. They voted for our campaign."
Cruz is fond of that ploy-----labeling votes he received (or stole) as anti-Trump-votes.....but Cruz never applies Trump's voluminous vote-getting as being against him.
If Trump won by staggering numbers....that means Cruz lost by staggering numbers.....many many more rejected Cruz than they did Trump.
Does this look like Trump was rejected?
Trump.....8,256,309.... 37.0 1%....758 delegates
Cruz......6,319,244....28.33%.....533 (plus all he can steal)
Cruz keeps losing and losing. About time he bows out gracefully and admit he lost. And he should stop finagling the numbers.
================================================
Lowlife Ted ....the human cockaroach....is crawling around 24/7 grabbing delegates he is not entitled to.
If there were any failings, it's b/c the Trump people just did not envision the likes of a scumbag like St Ted, reworking the rules to HIS benefit.......the Saint is obsessed w/ Trump hatred, bent on undoing Trump's wins.
AS FREEPER SAM ADAMS76 POSTED: "Cruz would love to have Trumps 'delegate problems.' Trump is hundreds of delegates ahead and about to ring up a couple hundred more before this month is up. What happened to Cruzs much ballyhooed ground game in the Deep South? He had his head handed to him by a Yankee. I dont see much Cruz ground game here in New York either. Except for some footprints in the Bronx where he made a rather hasty retreat. I guess Cruz isnt in Kansas anymore." (hat tip Sam Adams 76)
My biggest gripe is con artist Cruz sees a "party rule" and connives to make it work only to HIS advantage. Crux is exactly the type of candidate w/ an obsessive thirst for power that the Framers of the Constitution wanted the new Nation to guard against.
When candidates lose, they gracefully bow out. St Cruz Gives a victory speech. His maniacal lust for power tags him as the kind of candidate the Framers of The Constitution wanted the new Nation to avoid.
Again, if he drops out before the convention the conventions has no effect on him and the State rules control.
Nice try, but you missed.
Kasich has teamed up with Trump in MI.
Cruz is bought paid for and OWNED!!!
NEW YORK — This Monday, assorted bankers, traders and Wall Street lawyers will gather inside the neo-Georgian walls of the Harvard Club in midtown Manhattan to write big checks to an unlikely recipient: Ted Cruz.
