What is it about the Duluth-Two Harbors expressway?
In February it was a Nissan Sentra doing 137 mph. And on Friday night a jet-black 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS was clocked at 171 mph on that stretch of Minnesota Highway 61.
Hermantown Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn Padden was on loan as part of a Minnesota State Patrol "Toward Zero Deaths" DWI saturation effort Friday night when the radar in his Dodge Charger squad car started screaming

That thing just reinforced the stigma Datsun always had for being made from recycled beer cans. Tinniest car ever.
Or
Maybe, just maybe, mind you, the radar gun needs recalibration?
Geez, I lived in McLean back in ‘59. Yikes. Now I’m really dating myself. Just as an aside, we did a field trip to Lake Cacapon (sp) in the back of flat bed semis with side rails and hay bails. Think that could ever happen today? LOL! No problems except for the M-80’s in the lake. :>)
I got stopped doing, supposedly, 128 in a ‘92 Purple Camaro with T-Tops. That was one fast machine. That 350 would wind out like nothing I ever owned before or since.
In the mid-'60s, the Ford Galaxies that many state police departments used had a 427 with dual 4-bbl carbs. NASCAR engine, IIRC. When you think about the brakes, suspension and steering of the day - yeah, scary.
I drove my fist 100k miles in Germany on the autobahns. How about you?
And your analogy failed and I will tell you why.
If everyone is traveling at relatively the same speed it’s not much of an issue. The problem occurs when most of the other vehicles on any given roadway are traveling at much slower speeds. That’s a recipe for death and disaster.
My old BMW 318 weighed around 2500 and had a whopping 105 hp. She would hit 120.
I knew a guy who told me he got nailed doing 195 along I-94 in Michigan. A long razor straight stretch. This was back in the muscle car says.
The cop was so impressed that he actually pulled over, the ticket was for 5 mph over.
Another friend outran the cops when they clocked him at 165. I’ve driven his car and it’s absolutely capable.
Years ago I got my wife minivan up to 118.
Lots of the late night street racers used 295 between Anacostia and the Beltway or Indian Head Hwy. until the Md. State Police shut it down because of too many wrecks and the occasional D.O.A.
That’s fast enough. Dads big Plymouth might have gone faster, but the speedo pegged at 140. It hit dips in the road pretty hard at that speed. I was 19 or so and didn’t know enough to be scared. I think dad might have been showing off a little.
I agree with what your saying 100%, i have a 5 mile stretch on i 86 in NY that runs across the Seneca Nation Reservation, it has a 5 ft high concrete barrier between the east/west lanes and nothing on the other side. At 56 i’m not as wild as i used to be so i keep to 150-160 when i feel the need. The best part is my snowmobile will smoke the bike in the quarter mile when set up to run ashfault.
My Silverado will possibly hit 200k miles right around its 5th birthday. 2 weeks after I bought it I took it up in the White-Inyos via a road that went up 7000 feet in 3.5 miles. Its 4th trip across the country will be this October...
You cannot out run a radio.
One of our track coaches in college was a former racer. I think he drove at Lemans.
Anyway he told us a story of how he was driving his Nash/Healy with his mechanic. They were checking it out after being tuned.
They passed a local sheriff who immediately turned on his lights. Dr. Parks said they accelerated, went over a hill then did a 180. They waved to the cop when they met and passed.
I ride an 06 ZX-10.
I think US Route 61 (from Louisiana to Minnesota) links with or follows the same route as MN-61. In the New Orleans area, US 61 is known as “Airline Highway”, said to go all the way to the Canadian border.
I got there in about '65. 7th grade. Aw, crap, that was 50 years ago! Not long after the Civil War - remember the Battle of Bull Run! It was a great place back in the 60's and early 70's. Now I don't want to get any closer than Fredericksburg or Warrenton.
Just sold my 06 CBR1000RR this past Saturday.
Going Thursday morning to pick up my brand new BMW S1000RR.
SWEET!!!! Beautiful bike you are picking up, i’m in the middle of a full restoration of a 76 Suzuki GT 750 Water Buffalo.
Wasn’t that 29/211 out there? There was a drive in theater out that way. I lost a trooper out there one night in my camaro, got off in Manasses and promptly had a local adhere to my bumper for the longest 7 or 8 miles of my life...
