Exclusive: Blocking Trump could hurt Republicans in election - Reuters/Ipsos poll

(Reuters) - A third of Republican voters who support Donald Trump could turn their backs on their party in November's presidential election if he is denied the nomination in a contested convention, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The results are bad news for Trump's rivals as well as party elites opposed to the real estate billionaire, suggesting that an alternative Republican nominee for the Nov. 8 presidential race would have a tougher road against the Democrats.

"If it’s a close election, this is devastating news" for the Republicans, said Donald Green, an expert on election turnout at Columbia University.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted March 30 to April 8 asked Trump’s Republican supporters two questions: if Trump wins the most delegates in the primaries but loses the nomination, what would they do on Election Day, and how would it impact their relationship with the Republican Party?

Sixty-six percent said they would vote for the candidate who eventually wins the nomination, while the remaining third were split between a number of alternatives such as not voting, supporting a third-party candidate, and switching parties and voting for the Democratic nominee.

Meanwhile, 58 percent said they would remain with the Republican Party. Another 16 percent said they would leave it, and 26 percent said they did not know what they would do with their registration. The online poll of 468 Republican Trump supporters has a credibility interval of 5.3 percentage points.

You’re either lying or you’re not very observant.

An arrogant, ignorant little troll, aren’t you?

You claim that Cruz worshippers mean it when they say they will never vote for Trump. Yet, you claim that Trump supporters who have stated they would never vote for Cruz, would vote for Cruz if he were the nominee.

Just what makes you think that? Are you a mind reader?

I would advise you to be quiet, you’re embarrassing yourself.

RE “...could hurt the Republican Party...”

Count on it.

We’ll make sure of it.

Any Republican candidate who comes out in favor of Cruz will lose my support and vote.

"Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is seeking to catch Trump in the Republican delegate count, is viewed unfavorably by 59 percent"

"MOE +/- 3.3"

Statistical tie Tedlim... or can't you count to +/-3.3 lol... or would you actually cite an AP poll as somehow favorable to any GOP candidate lol... Damn Charles get a day job...

“Surely there is an unknown member of the Bush clan they can did up, maybe the Hispanic(made up word) one.”

I have no love for the Bushes or the Rubios either. Do you dispute that the republicans should nominate someone who will win?

You put the vote to the people and ignore the results is not good.

the anti-Trump people aren’t Cruz people per se, but are just vehemently opposed to Trump’s boorish behavior. . . .

Correct. The reasons I am opposed to Trump are independent of my support of Cruz. I am opposed to Trump for the nomination because he displays the worst character, the lowest morals, the most boorish behavior, the shallowest grasp of the issues, the least comprehension of conservatism, and the most untrustworthy track record--the overall combination of these factors--of any Republican presidential candidate I have ever seen. That said, I would probably still vote for him against Hillary. :-)

~~It’s easy to say to a pollster that you’ll desert the party if you don’t get you way, but actually doing it when faced with Hillary is another matter entirely. ~~

I voted for *McCain* to try to keep Obama out of the white house. So I’ve been down that road.

~~I am 90% certain that I won’t vote for President this year if my choices are Trump and Hillary~~

So if Trump’s the Republican nominee you’ll walk from the party? That’s your prerogative.

~~If Trump were to really do what he says he’ll do there isn’t a lick of difference between Cruz and him on most major issues, except that Cruz will actually act in the manner he indicates, whereas Trump could revert to form.~~

You’re basically calling Trump a liar without any indication he is one. I’ll return the favor to Cruz and add that I don’t like who he is as a person.

Their destruction campaign of Trump absolutely proves that is not their goal. How would the debate be framed right now if they had not devoted so much energy and money trying to destroy Trump and yet he still stands.

That’s the crux of it. Trump’s unfavorables have been helped along by an onslaught of GOPe attack ads, in conjunction with media hysteria.

Had any of this “politics of personal destruction” been aimed at Cruz or Kasich, he’d be sitting in a corner rocking back and forth.

Charles, I know Trump’s a little rough around the edges and not as polished and dignified as Cruz, but maybe some day Trump can achieve that dignity.

~~Take the last one. Clearly, in the heat of the battle, people claim they will do things that they really won’t do when push comes to shove. Yet the Trump supporter said that even more would not vote.

He’s probably wrong, and I tried to explain why.~~

Why would I be wrong when you yourself told me you would walk from the party rather than vote for Trump? Do you believe your conviction is stronger than mine?

I’m with you on that! Decades of being lied to, taken for granted, and insulted by ‘my’ party has me quietly seething. It’s time for heads on sticks!

I don’t see that. I stay off the general threads because the Cruz supporters call me names, throw insults, and are rude.

the principle that the occurrence of an accident implies negligence.

How does that relate to the GOP attacking their frontrunner this entire campaign?

Exactly. What about the unwritten rule that when a clear frontrunner emerges, the party gets behind him and moves on to fighting the general election? The GOPe threw that one out the window, and enabled the media and Democrats, echoing their attacks and assaults.

Anyone other than Trump would have much higher unfavorables in this situation. And if the nominee is someone other than Trump, the media and Democrats will have a field day, driving that person's unfavorables much higher than Trump's.
