Exclusive: Blocking Trump could hurt Republicans in election - Reuters/Ipsos poll

(Reuters) - A third of Republican voters who support Donald Trump could turn their backs on their party in November's presidential election if he is denied the nomination in a contested convention, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The results are bad news for Trump's rivals as well as party elites opposed to the real estate billionaire, suggesting that an alternative Republican nominee for the Nov. 8 presidential race would have a tougher road against the Democrats.

"If it’s a close election, this is devastating news" for the Republicans, said Donald Green, an expert on election turnout at Columbia University.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted March 30 to April 8 asked Trump’s Republican supporters two questions: if Trump wins the most delegates in the primaries but loses the nomination, what would they do on Election Day, and how would it impact their relationship with the Republican Party?

Sixty-six percent said they would vote for the candidate who eventually wins the nomination, while the remaining third were split between a number of alternatives such as not voting, supporting a third-party candidate, and switching parties and voting for the Democratic nominee.

Meanwhile, 58 percent said they would remain with the Republican Party. Another 16 percent said they would leave it, and 26 percent said they did not know what they would do with their registration. The online poll of 468 Republican Trump supporters has a credibility interval of 5.3 percentage points.

I will not vote for anyone else but Trump. The GOP will lose the all three branches of government without us Trump supporters. The only way i would consider to vote for Cruz is if he comes into Cleveland with more delegates. Otherwise i dont want to be any part of this corrupt and disgusting republican party!

I recall that election model, as well. Can you dig it out, please?

I have yet to see a Cruz supporter “adamantly demeaning, discounting and marginalizing other Americans’ thoughts and wants....”

Very selective seeing by you, in fact there is plenty of examples on this thread, open your eyes.

Actually, if you read most of my posts you’ll come to understand that I’m usually trying to reason with them, pointing out where their logic falls apart.

Take the last one. Clearly, in the heat of the battle, people claim they will do things that they really won’t do when push comes to shove. Yet the Trump supporter said that even more would not vote.

He’s probably wrong, and I tried to explain why. I also explained that the anti-Trump people aren’t Cruz people per se, but are just vehemently opposed to Trump’s boorish behavior, which is why they won’t vote for him rather than making the decision on policy grounds.

If that demoralizes them (which I doubt), so be it. I’m not being paid, so I probably am just wasting my time.

I think that could damage lots of good conservatives down-ticket
*************************

Who would they be?

There are a handful in the Senate and maybe 45 in House, none of them would distance themselves from Trump.
The rest all should be Cantorized in the primaries.

How long will a country of 325 million be made to heel by nine robed tyrants?

Newt played out a simple plan for reigning in the courts last election. Truth id I don't think they want to because the court advances their true agenda with out them being blamed for it.

I will be standing in the Mall cheering on the inauguration of President Cruz.

In Venezuela maybe, but not here. You are hysterical.

Kansas has 3,000,000 people.

Less than 89,000 Republicans voted in your primary.

That is a very poor showing. Less than 3%.

So, FReeper heights, if Trump is not the nominee, you will vote for all Democrats. And you’re stating that openly here. Wow.

If Mark Levin can go on National Radio and proclaim that he will never vote for Trump are you saying Wow over that?

Checked Cruz’s unfavorables? Last poll they were 59%.

Have you checked Trump's unfavorables? They are eye-popping. Or worse, how many would definitely not vote for him? Here is the latest poll:

The Republican Establishment had better do some extremely serious thinking.

What a novel idea, to bad it comes from a lowly voter.

RCP says everyone loses to either Dem right now, so get off the Tedlim crack pipe and realize every single poll since Reagan's 2nd term has "shown" the GOP candidate fighting from behind in every single general election, including '04.

Cliff Note's for Tedlims®: There's no truth to citing general election polls before Labor Day, Tedlim. Now go play in the sandbox...

Excuse me. A primary has early voting which allows selfless workers in important jobs be able to vote. 71,000 caucused out of a population of 2.9 million people. That’s outrageous and you should be disgusted.
