FBI can't unlock anything newer than Apple's iPhone 5c, Comey reveals

The unlocking procedure used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to break into an iPhone 5c at the center of the San Bernardino case cannot be used on new devices, the bureau's director said on Wednesday.

The IP Box setup, via MDSec.

Comey told a group of students and educators at Kenyon College in Ohio that his department had "purchased a tool" from a third party to unlock the iPhone in question, according to CNN Money. Though he stopped short of revealing the exact process, he did note that it would not work on more modern handsets.

"This doesn't work on 6S, doesn't work on a 5S, and so we have a tool that works on a narrow slice of phones," Comey said.

Discussing Apple's request that the bureau unveil its method, Comey was noncommittal but said he was worried about losing what little access the bureau does have.

"We tell Apple, then they're going to fix it, then we're back where we started from," he said. "We may end up there, we just haven't decided yet."

Since the FBI revealed its success late last month, most speculation regarding their method has centered around the so-called "IP Box" that first appeared last spring. That tool — which retails for less than $300 — latches onto a susceptible iPhone's power circuitry and enters PINs over USB.

When a wrong guess is detected, the tool aggressively cuts power to the iPhone's logic board before the guess is recorded, defeating the 10-try limit.

Apple is believed to have patched this hole in older iPhones with iOS 8.1.1; as the iPhone 5c in question is thought to be running iOS 9, the FBI has either chosen a different method or has purchased the device from a company that has discovered an as-yet unreported flaw in later software.

Beginning with the iPhone 5S, PIN guesses are managed in the hardware Secure Enclave, rendering such an attack useless.

Three separate agencies in this example, and if there were any sanctions or other penalties for these lies I have missed them.

None of those are examples of a law enforcement agent, (who remember, must be considered trustworthy by the legal system) lying to a judge.

Perjury is a career ender for a law enforcement official.

The whole thing being public with Apple didn’t make sense, if they had any idea it was this easy to do it by paying someone else and not forcing Apple to do it. They had no idea how long Apple was going to fight them in the courts? I find it hard to believe, anyhow. Stinks of either gross incompetence or kabuki theatre. Why not just drop the case against Apple and let everyone draw their own conclusions?

Apple was the one that forced it public. No, the FBI didn't know anyone else could do it when they filed with the court.

They had no idea how long Apple was going to fight them in the courts?

Considering how many (more than 100) times Apple had helped them in the past, they didn't think Apple would have a screech fest over it. They thought Apple would simply obey the court without being an @$$ about it.

I find it hard to believe, anyhow. Stinks of either gross incompetence or kabuki theatre.

Yes, Drama Queen Tim Cook was grossly incompetent in this fight he picked with the FBI, and Tim Cook also created a very extensive Kabuki Theater Drama for the hordes of Apple fans to swallow... which most of them appear to have done.

Why not just drop the case against Apple and let everyone draw their own conclusions?

Because the Law Enforcement agents felt that other innocent lives might be at risk if that locked phone contained terrorism related information.

Apple should not have been playing games with other people's lives. As it turned out, they didn't even prevent what they claimed they were trying to prevent; Government access to every Iphone 5c out there.

So why let anyone know some other guys did it for them? Why give an explanation at all?

Why do I always suspect disinformation ?

Yeah, I thought they had that iPhone opened immediately and were using the whole Apple fiasco to buy time to run down the information they found.

In theory, perhaps.

In practice? Well... can you show me an example of where this has actually happened in recent years? I’m a voracious news reader and have been for a very long time and I can’t think of a single time where “testilying” or any other form of perjury by law enforcement has been punished in any way.

Between the thin blue line and prosecutors being tied to law enforcement at the hip, I would be shocked to see that there is any deterrent value in that alleged risk.

Because Apple inc made it into a very public legal fight. With hundreds of millions of people wondering "what happened to that Apple FBI fight?" the chances of keeping the eventual resolution of it a secret were slim and none.

Once you have blown up the airwaves with "The GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO BREAK INTO EVERYONE'S PHONES!!!!" it gets pretty hard to tell everyone to "go back to sleep."

My understanding is that they were unaware that another company could do this until after they had already made their filing. Perhaps it was the publicity that motivated this other company to try to crack the IPhone?

You are right. I don't see the FBI advertising the capability if they didn't have to. Ergo, they weren't aware of it (or didn't believe it) prior to making their filing.

Oh, DL, that's just more of your patented bill shut. It's been revealed that the FBI has been contracting with Cellebrite since 2003 to unlock all manner of mobile devices. In fact, Cellebrite has been the "go-to" source for such unlocking for over 50 government agencies they have contracts with, including the FBI. Of course, that's one of those inconvenient things called a fact.

You've never met one of those that you couldn't ignore.

Apple was the one that forced it public. No, the FBI didn't know anyone else could do it when they filed with the court.

Using your Ouija board again, DiogenesLamp, and ignoring more of those INCONVENIENT FACTS as you also pull more "facturds" out of your stinky sphincter?

  1. Fact: The FBI held a press conference as soon as the got the All Writs Act Court Order signed by Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym at a court non-hearing where Apple was not invited, nor even made aware it was happening. Simultaneously, FBI Director James Comey also held a press announcement on the East Coast to announcement on the Court order to Apple. Can you say coordinated publicity campaign? Apple heard about the Court Order on the NEWS. That alone shoots down your lie about Apple forcing it public. LIAR.

  2. Fact: You don't have a clue about what the FBI knew about opening that iPhone 5C, but that doesn't stop you from pontificating that you do know.

  3. Fact: Apple's statement on its assistant to law enforcement has made it quite clear about what it can, and cannot do, and what it is willing to do. That statement has been on Apple's website for two years, unchanged since the release of the A7 and later processors. Apple had already drawn its stand in the courts several times before the FBI brought this out in this case. The cases you claim Apple had helped on before were for phones that were not protected by encryption as complete as what was involved with the iPhone 5C and later iPhones. . . Nor did any of them require what was included in the Pym court order. Different times, different situations.

  4. Fact: as shown above, it was the FBI and the DOJ who started this "fight" and the incompetence, as shown by the losses suffered by the FBI and the DOJ in the New York case which is an exactly similar situation, demonstrates THEIR incompetence, not Apple who was the winner in that case.

  5. Fact: Apple was never trying to prevent what you are again attempting to re-write the facts to imply, that Apple was merely trying to prevent the unlocking of every iPhone 5C. LIAR! Your attempt to re-frame the debate into something that was NOT the case, is disingenuous and a total lie! But then, that's what you do in every post. You pull out one of your signature "facturds" and try to elevate it to the level of a facts, but we know you and your lying methods. We will NOT allow you to get away with it.

Did you study at the knee of Saul Alinsky, or perhaps it was some where farther back on his anatomy?

Notice how you lie? You make a point that is absolutely true, but completely misleading in how it actually applied to the real life situation.

Yes, Cellebrite has been unlocking Iphones for the FBI for a long time, but up to that point, not Iphone 5cs running the newer operating system.

I'm on to your game. You keep saying things that are in fact true, but completely misleading in how they apply to the issue being discussed.

You do it constantly with the FBI filing. You keep quoting only the part you want people to focus on, and absolutely ignoring the other part that gave Apple a blank check to do it any way they wanted to.

An accomplished liar knows that the best way to push a lie is to put just enough truth in it to make it sound believable. You just rely on people not bothering to find out the details. You get by with your assertions because most of the time you are dealing with people who don't actually bother to find out what is the truth.

This is the same thing Apple inc did with their screaming fit about the government wanting to unlock everybody's Iphones. It was a lie, but it had just enough truth in it that people were willing to believe it.

I am not convinced the FBI Director is revealing the Truth.

—If the FBI had unlocked the phone during the first week, I doubt they would say so.

—In my opinion the conflict with Apple may be a contrivance.

Deception is a major tool in warfare. Plant false information.

I've posted the entire Court Order. Apple could do it any way, but however they did it the method would be handed over to the FBI at the end. You never have shown us your section that allows what you claim, that Apple may retain the iPhone afterwards. LIAR.

I've posted the entire Court Order.

Exactly. And you routinely ignore the part of the FBI filing where Apple is permitted to accomplish the task in any manner they see fit.

By hyping that bundle of text, you deliberately draw attention away from the salient fact that Apple had complete control.

This is what good liars do. You are deliberately misdirecting everyone's attention from the facts that do not confirm to your Propaganda.

Regarding what you write, I'll have to appeal to Mark Twain.

"“If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed. "

That's you. A font of misinformation. Reading what you write is worse than being ignorant. It's a guaranteed manner of insuring that a person "knows so much which isn't so." (To Paraphrase Reagan.)
