Ted Cruz told reporters in Wisconsin the story was “all lies.” Cruz then went on to blame the article on Donald Trump and his “henchmen.” Cruz argued Roger Stone has been forwarding the article today on the internet. He thinks Trump campaign is behind this story. Cruz also said the publisher of the National Enquirer is a friend of Donald Trump’s.
But these rumors did not start with Donald Trump.
The rumors were started by the Rubio Campaign and anti-Trump GOP elites.
On Friday the parent company for National Enquirer refuted Ted Cruz.
“No one influences the reporting that the National Enquirer does other than our own reporters and editors,” according to the statement. “We stand by the integrity of our coverage and remain committed to our aggressive reporting on such an important topic. The National Enquirer, more than any other publication, has been unflinching in its reporting on the 2016 presidential candidates.”

Taking the longer view, I see a different picture:
Trump and Pecker are friends - OK. Pecker sometimes flies on the “T-Bird” as Trump’s personal pilot calls it - OK. One can assume that Melania is sometimes on the plane as well - they all get along as friends.
Meanwhile, the National Enquirer has been getting the Cruz sex stories dropped over their transom for months. The “Anonymous” video from Monday even says they have sent out these stories to the media and will send more if Cruz doesn’t drop out. Agree that everybody has these stories?
Then, Liz Mair at the anti-Trump and pro-Cruz PAC publishes the Facebook ads with the GQ pictures just the days before the Utah Caucus that were purchased by Jeff Roe, the Cruz campaign manager.
Pecker sees this disgusting turn and thinks his friend, Melania Trump has been dragged unfairly into the campaign. He decides to have his team focus on the Cruz sex stories that have been circulating since at least January. The National Enquirer goes deeper and decides to publish the story.
Why is this Donald Trump’s doing? I would defend my friend’s honor.

Sure looks like some Cruz donors were swindled when $500K was funneled to Carly Fiorina. Didn't Dinesh D'Souza go to prison for campaign contribution illegalities? Now doubly glad that I hung up on the Cruz fundraisers who came begging.
The one thing I would like to add to your excellent insight — it appears that Ted’s behavior is very habitual in nature — addictive.
Ted is probably so addicted that he can not help himself. I would not be surprised if he gets caught red handed soon with all the pressure he is facing.

Even Billy Jeff understood what was logically required: “I did not have sex with that woman.” He was lying, but at least he was logical.
Cruz never made that simple direct statement: “I have never cheated on Heidi, period. I have always been faithful.” He did not need to use the word sex, although that would have been more precise.
Translated, what Cruz said was this: “Trump is attacking me by using my infidelities, and that sort of attack should not be in politics.” A totally different proposition.
But he did not, and why?
I agree. And if Ted is as pure as he says he is he should do a onetime 5 minute on camera statement with Heidi by his side swearing they are happy and nobody’s cheatin. Heidi has totally disappeared this week. I hate to say that I am guessing this is not Heidi’s first time at the cheater’s rodeo.
Rubio’s camp was shopping this story to the media for quite some time, it appears. Even going as far as sending some of them video evidence and then having his campaign manager advise via Twitter that ‘those in possession of ‘The Thing’ should not be worried about legal reprucussions’ - offering tactics to hide the discovery.
BTTT. This will drip out slowly. As for motivations, everyone seems to think this from a political perspective. But how about the more pedestrian? Someone may have cashed in a lotto ticket. That NE has salacious details seems to indicate that they might have someone with firsthand info. A lot of money will loosen tongues.

Here's why I tend to believe it: Cruz has been playing Constitutional Conservatives as our guy since he got to the US Senate. Then, all of a sudden, Cruz turned totally against Trump in vicious ways, put Neil Bush on his team, made a whole lot of other moves that seemed to be licking the boots of the GOP elite. Was it because he was trying to keep the story quiet by being the perfect slave to their world view and a promise to destroy Trump? It's the only thing that makes sense.
I'm disgusted that there was no IMMEDIATE outrage about the Melania photo being used on the eve of the Utah primary. I'm coming to the conclusion that Melania's the most decent person in this whole soap opera.
No, it isn't meaningless. NE didn't give up their source, they just eliminated Trump as a possible source. If Trump was the source, the National Enquirer would have kept quiet about it.
