Ted Cruz 'five mistress' affair story is 'garbage repor't spread by 'Donald Trump (trunc)

Married man Ted Cruz denounced a supermarket tabloid tale alleging his affairs with serial mistresses, blaming nemesis Donald Trump for planting the bogus report.

The Texas senator came out swinging Friday at both The Donald and the National Enquirer over a two-page spread that identified his quintet of lovers as "a hooker, a teacher & coworkers."

The prostitute was billed in the story as a "$1,000-a-night Washington call girl."

"I want to be crystal clear: these attacks are garbage,” Cruz ranted on his Facebook page. “For Donald J. Trump to enlist his friends at the National Enquirer and his political henchmen to do his bidding shows you that there is no low (where) Donald won’t go."

At a campaign event, the son of a Texas preacher called the story charing him with multiple affairs as "complete and utter lies ... a tabloid smear."

It’s difficult to believe the Enquirer would go forward with this without evidence, which they should show if ‘tis true.

Will Cruz be filing a lawsuit?

NOT against Mr. Donald Trump!

Stop blaming Trump for everything. Good God - Ted has you people so hoodwinked, it isn’t even funny. One of the women in this story is Katrina - who works for Trump. Do you think he would throw her under the bus like this? Where’s your sound judgment? I guess you don’t have any - you are suc a fool and a tool.

If innocent, he needs to sue.

If guilty, he cannot sue and deny the story under oath in discovery , if there is any chance that proof could emerge.

Whether he sues will be telling.

My thoughts precisely. If he is innocent, he should file a suit today, it’s Friday. He has enough $ to do that!

“NOT against Mr. Donald Trump!”

No he won’t, the last thing he wants is the women’s depositions under oath.

By your test, "just spreading rumors" becomes an absolute defense.

Yes, exactly. How do you think tabloids remain in business?

btw, it's not my test. I was just providing legal shorthand.

Except this scandal isn’t about Heidi, is it? Some on here are really dumb. His spilling the beans was about her work in the Bush administration. You need to buy a clue..

My point was that a publisher who knows or has reason to believe the rumopr is false, is still open to liability. The only way to get that finding is through a trial. "Just spreading rumors" is not an absolute defense.

Tabloids are sued and sometimes lose. I'm not asserting that Cruz wins, by the way. The question was who does he sue.

As you know the source of it is Rubio camp and #theThing not Trump. But then when your guy has no chance of winning keeping throwing stuff to see what sticks.

Correct!

There is absolutely no evidence that Donald Trump had anything to do with the National Enquirer story. Quite the opposite is only common sense.

Factually, given the logistics of a print media publication, the story was being presented by the National Enquirer long before Ted’s Super-PAC began the most recent series of attacks by targeting Mr. Trump’s wife, Melania.

In addition, as previously shared, all of the original people who were discussing the sexual affairs back in February and March – appeared to be Marco Rubio supporters.

As the origination of the story is told, it was pro-Cruz media company owners and content editors who refused to present the story; that’s probably how and why the story made its way to the tabloid press.

No, Cruz cannot sue the Enquirer because the Enquirer merely reported the existence of an allegation or rumor - it did not report the story itself. Cruz is a public figure and such speculation is not actionable.

Bingo! I don't think anyone wants to hear this, but it is true. So far, there is nothing that Cruz CAN sue over.

Also flying beneath the radar is the fact that National Enquirer CEO David Pecker (yep, that's his name) is a friend of Donald Trump, and that National Enquirer ran vicious hit pieces on Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina at key points in the current campaign. Strangely, National Enquirer has been friendly to Trump in spite of his own checkered personal life. Motive?

My point is that rumor-mongering about a public figure is a near absolute defense for media libel. Beyond that, suing a media company for defamation - which has a lower legal threshhold - is still difficult, lengthy and costly. Hillary will be in her second term in office by the time Cruz is awarded damages for this Trump attack.

It had to come out.

If not the GOPe, the left would take Cruz out with this if Cruz got the nomination. That would have been even more hurtful to him & his family.

This smells like Mitch McConnell. Cruz did not apologize.

This begs a greater question, since we went through crap like this with other candidates, why do they even run with this type of skeleton in their closet?

Those who thump the bible the hardest are often found to have the most serious failings.

That sentiment is often expressed, but I seriously don't think it is true. When it does happen it is a big story, so it sticks out, and we remember it for a long time. I'd wager that, by and large, the "thumpers" have a pretty good track record.

This isn't posted to be snarky, just as an observation.

Hell if I know. It was an innocent question. My first thought was the publisher, but as others pointed out they’re protected. Now Cruz is blaming Trump. Maybe he can sue him? Or maybe they should meet with seconds and duel it out. Honor has been abused.

Naw, can't allow discovery.

Carol Burnett went through the wringer to get her judgement years ago and National Enquirer is more careful these days
