Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)is being accused of lifting a line from 1995s The American President while defending his wife Heidi following a Twitter bout with frontrunner Donald Trump.
Responding to Trumps warning to Cruz to be careful after an anti-Trump super PAC used a photo of Trumps wife Malania posing nude for GQ in 2000 in an ad in Utah, the Texas Senator initially responded by calling Trump a coward.
Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: Lyin Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!
Cruz later responded: Pic of your wife not from us. Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, youre more of a coward than I thought. #classless.
Cruz then told CNN Wednesday morning, If Donald wants to get into a character fight, hes better off sticking with me, because Heidi is way out of his league.
The New York Daily News is accusing Cruz of borrowing the line from the Michael Douglas film The American President without giving it attribution.
In the film, Douglas, who plays American President Andrew Shepherd, warns Sen. Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss) to leave Annette Benings character, Sydney Ellen Wade, out of a political dispute.
You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league, Douglas says in the film.

Cruz: Donald, I am “shocked, SHOCKED” that you would resort to this behavior. “A man has to know his own limitations,” Donald, so “Take your stinking paws off [Heidi], you damned dirty ape!” You need to change your behavior Donald... Do. Or do not. There is no try.
The big issue I have is Trump isn’t that impressed by Hispanics having super powers.
Trump is bemused by some sort of super powers that foreign workers have.
Cruz says “My people don’t beg because of shame”
I’m thinking Melania has worn out her welcome with Trump.
The body language I see between them when she appears with him at interviews and events looks very forced and phony.
Trump will keep her through the campaign but then he’ll start lookin’
It’s a good thing for him that he’s rich, because he doesn’t look that great anymore and is probably demanding and domineering.
They see him different than we do.
They are blinded by their support for him.
We aren’t.
I know they think we do it too, but I think out the things he does, decide if it is worthy of me chucking the whole thing or not.
So far, nothing comes even close. I know what his past was. I’ve looked at it. He’s not pushing his past. He’s pushing a different agenda. That works for me.
I think Ted is the one who has been trying to make us believe he’s something he isn’t, and they are even considering that at all.
You’re insane.
If you want dumb, you’ve got dumb in Donald Trump.
Ted Cruz’ intelligence cannot be questioned by any reasonable standard.
You are being ridiculous to try.
For a while he would drag her to interviews and never let her speak. Maybe she put her foot down over that.
Then Tedsy continued his sincere response to the media, in his honking, nasal, high-pitched twang, saying, "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world..." |
“When asked about this shameless quote stealing, Cruz responded...”
Very funny and right on the mark
If the gope steal the nomination from Trump I will never vote for this Canadian con man, I will write Trump's name in.
The Dems and MSM are going to absolutely destroy Trump. If his supporters think that the general election debate moderators are going to let him turn those debates onto another clown shoe, they will be seriously disappointed. I fully expect them to cut his MIC when he starts his talking over and interrupting. He would explode. Not good for his old ticker or the brain veins...
Hilarious!
My take on Cruz (twice) quoting Sorkin is that he’s pretending to already be the president. He *really* wants that job.
In propaganda, the phrase is key. If you can nail someone with a kill shot, it’s to your advantage.
The use of a movie line is a decent ploy, if it is appropriate.
Here Cruz used that line to defend his wife, as the President in the movie used it to defend his girl friend.
I don’t have a problem with that. However, if the president’s team had already taken a shot at the Senator’s wife, it would render this line woefully inappropriate. The president would have been the primary offender.
So here Ted goes hoping to disgrace Trump with that line, but failing to realize the dynamics are different here. Trump’s wife was attacked first by Ted’s overall team.
Trump tossed out the idea that if that’s the way Ted wants to play, he can play the game too. It was appropriate to say that.
Ted could demand his PAC stop, or watch what happens.
I don’t think Ted wants that.
So I don’t see this as a stolen phrase. Ted was actually hoping folks knew of the phrase, how it was used, and how inappropriate an attack on a spouse would be, instant identity with the movie.
Yeah Ted, as a matter of fact it was inappropriate for your team to attack Melania. If Trump had used the line Ted did, it would have been appropriate.
Ted used it, and it wasn’t.
Once again, Ted fails the commons sense social skills test.
This guy is a nimrod.
You are really a vile creature, you know. And you say your trash right out in the open, which is good because it gives all normal human beings the opportunity to judge you for the peace of garbage you are. And a normal human being you aren’t. I suspect you live a very miserable life, as you have to live with yourself and that must be very miserable indeed.
All Ted needs is a good trench coat from London Fog. He can buy a matching one for Carly to wear, as she plays the Ingrid Bergman part. Maybe have Woody Allen film it in black & white.
Peace = piece above. Typo.
Actually, I have a very joyful life. Your unnatural attachment to a political candidate is sad. And I’m sorry, you aren’t going to get to have Trump’s next baby. Nice try though.
Are you quoting crazy Glenn Beck in your Tagline ? Wow just wow ...
That cartoon is so amazingly TERRIFIC.
