Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)is being accused of lifting a line from 1995’s The American President while defending his wife Heidi following a Twitter bout with frontrunner Donald Trump.
Responding to Trump’s warning to Cruz to “be careful” after an anti-Trump super PAC used a photo of Trump’s wife Malania posing nude for GQ in 2000 in an ad in Utah, the Texas Senator initially responded by calling Trump a “coward.”
Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: “Lyin’ Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”
Cruz later responded: “Pic of your wife not from us. Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, you’re more of a coward than I thought. #classless.”
Cruz then told CNN Wednesday morning, “If Donald wants to get into a character fight, he’s better off sticking with me, because Heidi is way out of his league.”
The New York Daily News is accusing Cruz of borrowing the line from the Michael Douglas film The American President without giving it attribution.
In the film, Douglas, who plays American President Andrew Shepherd, warns Sen. Bob Rumson (Richard Dreyfuss) to leave Annette Bening’s character, Sydney Ellen Wade, out of a political dispute.
“You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, ’cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league,” Douglas says in the film.

OK guys out there, so if you were in Donald Trump’s place and some guy posted nude photos of your wife on advertisement for his campaign against you, would you view that as a low blow attack stooping low enough to affect your family?
Would you buy that he didn’t know if he has done shady things before and always acted like he just found out. If he hadn’t lied over the recent past and never apologized in public for anything, never denounced people in his campaign who not only went over the line, but erased the line?
Would you believe his Pac didn’t do it, or did it without anyone in his campaign knowing. Cruz knows his campaign managers reputation as being a low down scumbag, its been written up lots.
So me personally as Zenjitsuman, I might not be the right one to ask what I would do, I wouldn’t want to say. But, my wife has the role of mother just like Melania is Barron’s mother, and I wouldn’t want my kids seeing 20 year old nude pictures of his mom out there.
Not that Melania isn’t looking good in the photos, she was of course a top echelon model and near physical perfection.
So what gets me is the Nerve of Cruz to attack Trump as “a coward for threatening his wife”

But I'll grant him the conscious use of cliche if you say among some it would be obvious, and maybe he made the mistake of thinking everyone would know it, that all would recognize it. What I won't grant him is that he had nothing to do with the ad. I don't hate Cruz. But I am picking up a lot - a lot - that gives me the willies about him. Not like I'm scared of him ... just that I don't think he's who he says he is. I'm beginning to suspect he isn't really anybody.
These pictures were already in the public domain. This PAC was actually doing Trump a favor by getting them out there.
