A Howard County sheriff's deputy and a suspect died following an overnight shooting in Russiaville.

Deputy Carl Koontz and Sgt. Jordan Buckley were shot while trying to serve arrest and search warrants around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in connection with a drug case, according to Howard County Sheriff Steven Rogers. The Howard County Sheriff's Department, Kokomo police and Russiaville Town Marshal were involved in the case.

Deputies arrived at the residence in the 300 block of Chandler Street and tried to make contact with the suspect. No one responded when they announced themselves at the residence; when they entered, gunfire ensued. The deputies fired back, Rogers said.

“At that time upon entry, the officers received gunfire," Rogers said during a news conference Sunday morning. "Two officers were injured. Both officers were transported to Indianapolis."

A Russiaville officer and other deputies pulled Koontz and Buckley to safety. They went first to Howard Regional Hospital before being airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Koontz, 27 years old and a 3-year veteran, was in critical condition and had surgery Sunday. He succumbed to his injuries, officials said during an 11:45 a.m. update on the case. Buckley, a 9-year veteran with the department, was recovering from his wounds. Authorities described Buckley's condition as stable.

This one is weird.

They were serving a warrant in a small town, very late on a Saturday night, but as of 4PM, they had not released the name that was on the warrant, and who the dead person in the house is.

My daughter is about 10 miles away and said you would never expect it from this town. Too many law enforcement officers are dying.

MASSIVE Meth and Heroin problem in Rural Indiana over the last 3-5 years.

The factories have all closed, the jobs are all gone.
The only way for many to pay the rent now is welfare and/or slinging drugs.

Hopey...
Changey...
And all that...

I’ve been a cop for a long time now. Saddens me about the complete lack of respect many folks show police. I always kiss my family at night or in the morning before going to a job that most Americans could not handle.

Yea. My daughter is in suburb of Kokomo. Decent area but surrounded by drugs and crime. She works at the hospital and urgent care and sees plenty. She’s 20 years old and can’t wait to vote for Trump.

Is it common for leo’s to serve warrants in the middle of the night?

Thanks for all you do. . . Be safe.

Just an otherwise nonviolent drug offender bites the dust, but not before killing a cop.

Thank you for being on the job.

Years ago, my best friend decided he wanted to be a Sheriff’s deputy. He was even distantly related to the county Sheriff.

He flunked on something physical related I think.

I could not see him being a cop. He is too good natured a guy and that would have probably been his downfall.

I was just going to post an article on this. I'm just south of Kokomo a few miles.

Young cop with a new family. There's a GoFundMe account out there for him that has raised over $12,000 for them already.

Warrant from neighboring county for drug paraphernalia (syringe) and trailer park. We definitely have a bit of a drug problem in the white trash community around here.

The Kokomo Perspective always puts all the mug shots out there for all to see. Several fried-up people in there every week.

Update 11:50 a.m.: INDIANAPOLIS — Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz, 27, who was shot while serving a warrant in Russiaville in the early morning hours Sunday, has died at an Indianapolis hospital.

During a press conference at Methodist Hospital, Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers said Koontz will be “greatly missed.” Koontz served as a deputy for nearly three years and leaves behind his wife, Cassie Koontz, and young son, Noah Allendale Koontz.

Update 8 a.m.: During a press conference Sunday morning, Sheriff Steve Rogers verified that Howard County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz were shot at roughly 12:30 a.m. Sunday at 380 W. Chandler St., Russiaville, while serving a warrant with Kokomo Police Department officers.

While Buckley, a nine-year veteran of the department, is in stable condition, Koontz is in “very critical condition” and was entered into surgery at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, said Rogers. Koontz had been on the force for three years.

The two officers, both of whom were wearing body armor, were treated at Community Howard Regional Health before being airlifted to Indianapolis.

The identity of the shooter, who was declared dead at the scene by SWAT officers, could not be verified by the time of the press conference, said Rogers. The exact cause of death is not yet known.

During the investigation of a “recent event,” officers had learned the suspect was hiding at the home, he added.

“Officers had obtained a search warrant for the Chandler residence based on information the resident was wanted on an outstanding warrant,” he said, noting the warrant was from Clinton County for possession of a syringe.

When officers knocked on the door of the residence, they first received no response. They then entered the home, where they exchanged gunfire with the suspect after he fired upon the officers.

A Russiaville officer and other deputies were later able to extract Buckley and Koontz from the home and provide first aid, said Rogers.

Deputies also removed residents adjacent to the scene, after which Howard County, Kokomo Police Department and Indiana State Police SWAT teams attempted to contact the suspect at roughly 2:30 a.m., with no response.

Those efforts continued for nearly two hours before the suspect was found dead, noted Rogers.

Rogers said it is not unusual for police to serve a search warrant at the time they did Sunday morning. Police do not yet know how many shots were fired.

Updates are expected to come from the Indiana State Police on Twitter @ISPIndianapolis throughout the day. Indiana State Police is the lead investigative agency.

This story will be updated as more details emerge.

Update 5:55 a.m.: Indiana State Police have confirmed the man police say shot two Howard County sheriff’s deputies early Sunday morning is dead.

ISP confirmed when SWAT gained entry to the residence on Chandler Street, the male suspect was found dead.

RUSSIAVILLE — Two Howard County deputies have been shot while serving a warrant in Russiaville.

According to Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers, at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, sheriff’s deputies and Russiaville police attempted to serve a warrant to an unidentified man in a Russiaville trailer park.

After officers entered the residence at 380 W. Chandler St., they were met with gunfire, Rogers said. Two Howard County deputies were shot. They were stabilized at the scene and then transported to an Indianapolis hospital. Their condition is not known at this time.

SWAT teams from the sheriff’s department, Kokomo Police Department and the Indiana State Police are all on the scene trying to communicate with anyone still inside the trailer.

Rogers said it is not known how many people are inside the trailer.

More details are expected to be released at 10 a.m. Sunday.

I was just one of the thousands of people and hundreds of cops and firefighters lining highway 31 and intersections for the procession bringing this young man back to kokomo from Indy this afternoon. Must have been 300 or more vehicles in the procession from all over the state.

Was quite a tribute.

Half past midnight sounds like a really bad time to try a takedown.

An acquaintance who is a doctor who assists the FBI says they typically try and so it at 5 or 6 am when those sought are asleep or groggy.

I am so thankful for all the law enforcement that go to work everyday to keep us safe from scum like this. I don’t know what happened to our young people. They gave up and became a nation of junkies. From someone who has looked into the eyes of a junkie, I can tell you they have no soul. Truly frightening.
