Update 11:50 a.m.: INDIANAPOLIS — Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz, 27, who was shot while serving a warrant in Russiaville in the early morning hours Sunday, has died at an Indianapolis hospital.
During a press conference at Methodist Hospital, Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers said Koontz will be “greatly missed.” Koontz served as a deputy for nearly three years and leaves behind his wife, Cassie Koontz, and young son, Noah Allendale Koontz.
Update 8 a.m.: During a press conference Sunday morning, Sheriff Steve Rogers verified that Howard County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Buckley and Deputy Carl Koontz were shot at roughly 12:30 a.m. Sunday at 380 W. Chandler St., Russiaville, while serving a warrant with Kokomo Police Department officers.
While Buckley, a nine-year veteran of the department, is in stable condition, Koontz is in “very critical condition” and was entered into surgery at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, said Rogers. Koontz had been on the force for three years.
The two officers, both of whom were wearing body armor, were treated at Community Howard Regional Health before being airlifted to Indianapolis.
The identity of the shooter, who was declared dead at the scene by SWAT officers, could not be verified by the time of the press conference, said Rogers. The exact cause of death is not yet known.
During the investigation of a “recent event,” officers had learned the suspect was hiding at the home, he added.
“Officers had obtained a search warrant for the Chandler residence based on information the resident was wanted on an outstanding warrant,” he said, noting the warrant was from Clinton County for possession of a syringe.
When officers knocked on the door of the residence, they first received no response. They then entered the home, where they exchanged gunfire with the suspect after he fired upon the officers.
A Russiaville officer and other deputies were later able to extract Buckley and Koontz from the home and provide first aid, said Rogers.
Deputies also removed residents adjacent to the scene, after which Howard County, Kokomo Police Department and Indiana State Police SWAT teams attempted to contact the suspect at roughly 2:30 a.m., with no response.
Those efforts continued for nearly two hours before the suspect was found dead, noted Rogers.
Rogers said it is not unusual for police to serve a search warrant at the time they did Sunday morning. Police do not yet know how many shots were fired.

Update 5:55 a.m.: Indiana State Police have confirmed the man police say shot two Howard County sheriff’s deputies early Sunday morning is dead.
ISP confirmed when SWAT gained entry to the residence on Chandler Street, the male suspect was found dead.
RUSSIAVILLE — Two Howard County deputies have been shot while serving a warrant in Russiaville.
According to Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers, at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning, sheriff’s deputies and Russiaville police attempted to serve a warrant to an unidentified man in a Russiaville trailer park.
After officers entered the residence at 380 W. Chandler St., they were met with gunfire, Rogers said. Two Howard County deputies were shot. They were stabilized at the scene and then transported to an Indianapolis hospital. Their condition is not known at this time.
SWAT teams from the sheriff’s department, Kokomo Police Department and the Indiana State Police are all on the scene trying to communicate with anyone still inside the trailer.
Rogers said it is not known how many people are inside the trailer.
More details are expected to be released at 10 a.m. Sunday.
