Donald Trump's use of vocabulary and grammar is more elementary than that of other candidates, according to a new study that compared the candidates' English language skills.
The New York businessman's grammar was comparable to a 5th grader's, lower than the average 6th to 8th grade levels used by Democratic Sens. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, as well as Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, according to a newly released Carnegie Mellon University's Language Technologies Institute study.
Sanders scored highest in vocabulary, and was ranked at the level of an 11th grader. Trump was most comparable to a 7th grader, while Clinton, Cruz and Rubio were all ranked between 9th and 10th grade.
"This analysis shows the changes that candidates make in the level of their speech according to the type of speech," wrote report analysts Elliot Schumacher and Maxine Eskenazi. "It also reflects each candidate's combination of personal delivery style and their analysis of the level of the audience they want to address."
Ohio Gov. John Kasich was not included in the survey, and Rubio has since suspended his campaign following a loss in Florida's primary Tuesday.
The in-depth analysis even compared this year's candidates to previous U.S. presidents. Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan both boasted the highest cumulative speaking skills with averages hovering around a 10th grade level.
George W. Bush's grammar was rated worse than Trump's, ranked between 4th and 5th grade. But where Bush faltered in grammar, he made up for in vocabulary, which was at a 10th grade level.
That included the Northern Mariana Islands and some others.
I married a writer. Our kids were raised in a home with proper English.
Trumps speech patterns drive me crazy. But I understand what he is doing. And it’s smart.
I love you, man! LOL!
I write for American Thinker and work with mechanics. I also give briefings to executives. The dumbest thing I can do next to looking stupid is appearing to be the smartest person in the room. It took me years to learn this.
Trump is from New York City, which means English isn’t even his first language. LOL.
Stegner.
They don't bother me at all.
I'm HIGHLY educated, and know several languages.
But I've also worked the trades. Sometimes the guys gave me the business for "the word of the week".
I was bigger than they were, so I just laughed along with them. If I'd been a smaller guy, I'd have had to fight. :)
LOL! Take care.
Btw, I grew up across the river from Staten Island, so I get Trump. I also teach rifle marksmanship in Mississippi. You have to know your audience. Trump does.
LMAO.
Andy: "Who's black?"
Ali G: "Yo, I is."
As far as LSM insults of Trump go, this is the lamest.
I like that Trump talks like a real person rather than polished and fake like a politician.
” Im talking about vocabulary. His is unbelievably limited. That will put him at a tremendous disadvantage in negotiating with foreign leaders,”
Nonsense. What is important is to negotiate from a position of strength, not use of a flowery vocabulary.
I constantly see people on Twitter correcting Trump on his spelling, punctuation, capitalisation, and grammar. His posts are a joke — how difficult is it to make sure there are no errors in posts that are limited to 140 characters?
... apparently sufficient to appeal to enough of the voters for him to keep winning.
One doesn't get through Wharton without an excellent command of the English language.
how do they compare with the NY smashmouth kick in the groin direct NO PC BS honest for the people Trump STAND....????
not so well...
hence TRUMP will crush hillary like the dung beetle she is.....
UNLESS JUSTICE IS SERVED AND SHE IS IMPRISONED FOR THE MULTIPLE SECURITY FELONIES....
Right. In appearing to be the smartest person in the room, you actually have to have command of the room, without having actual command of the room [this is the case with most smart people - they're not in ACTUAL command]. It's a difficult proposition, since humans are naturally competitive - mentally AND physically. So the potential for challenge [mental OR physical] is always there.
What I've learned is that MOST people are trained by The System to fit themselves into a faux intellectual "pecking order", mostly by the government skools.
"I'm smarter, yer dumber, I'm dumber, yer smarter".
Since I exist outside these classifications, AND am bigger, I get to ignore them [smarter/dumber classifications CAN be imposed by physical size].
But for the most part, I avoid appearing to be the smartest person in the room. :)
Your observation could fit into a Sun Tzu text, ebs. :)
Just remember - none of the mean stuff I say to the cruzers is for real Cruzers like yourself.
I raise my bloody FR sword in salute to you, comrade-in-arms.
And may either of the best men win. :)
“How hard is it to say Shut up or well send in the B-52s?”
