Rubio’s Exit Leaves Trump With an Open Path to 1,237 Delegates
NYT.COM ^ | MARCH 16, 2016 | GREGOR AISCH, JOSH KATZ, JOSH KELLER and ALICIA PARLAPIANO

Trump’s victories on Tuesday extended his delegate lead and forced Sen Marco Rubio out of the race. Mr. Trump’s path to winning enough delegates to secure the Republican nomination is not assured, but he is in a strong position. If Mr. Trump maintains his current level of support in the remaining races, he would almost certainly secure the nomination.

After Tuesday’s contests, no other candidate retains a real chance of capturing the delegates required to win the nomination outright. Mr. Rubio dropped out, Gov. John Kasich of Ohio is too far behind, and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas would need to win the vast majority of the remaining delegates — a near impossibility.

But Mr. Trump still needs to win most of the remaining delegates to avoid a contested convention. If he continues his current performance and wins a series of key states — like Arizona, California and New York — he would get the needed delegates. Exit polls have indicated that most of Mr. Rubio’s support could be distributed to Mr. Trump’s competitors. If this support consolidates – with, say, 80 percent of Mr. Rubio's voters going to Mr. Cruz – this would cut into Mr. Trump’s delegate lead.

But gains by Mr. Cruz may not prevent Mr. Trump from winning the key states that ensure him enough delegates.

This interactive delegate calculator (at web site) uses each state’s delegate allocation rules, along with estimates of how favorable each district is for each candidate. To compute these estimates, we used a model based on polling, demographics and results from past primaries and caucuses.

Delegate totals as of March 15 are estimates of how all the delegates for each state will be allocated.

The Cruz campaign is merely carrying the GOPe water now. It is no longer feasible for him to win outright unless Trump quits right now. After NY, NJ, MD and PA, Trump will be at or near 900.

Cruz will not reach 800.

I listened to Lou Dobbs tonight with Ed Rollins and wish Ed spent the hour going over the convention rules

He said the John Kasich is nuts , he can't get on the floor that Trump and Cruz can block him with the 8 State Majority rul which he will never get.

He said that guy in North Dakota is nuts

Each State like Florida for example has to by State rules vote 99 votes for Trump for at least three times.

Kasich is nuts

But he said for Trump people he is the best thing

Cruz would have to win 80% of the remaining delegates

Ed Rollins said he looked at California 2 to 1 Trump

New York 27 Points Trump

Pennsylvania by 10 and New Jersey Trump was up big with Christie

Trump is going to now march methodically down the road to 1237. No brokered convention just a regular old nomination.

Cruz’s only chance to escape an embarrassing return to his senate seat is to cut a deal with Trump before its too late.

Rollins is 100% right. Kasich has to have cut a deal with either Trump or the establishment, who said they prefer Trump to Cruz, to block Cruz. There’s no other reason for him to keep running.

I don’t see Trump getting many Rubio voters, they will go to Cruz and Kasich.

That might explain why the GOPe is making overtures to Cruz ...

But since Trump is on his way to winning outright ... what does Cruz have to offer?

The Cruz campaign is merely carrying the GOPe water now. It is no longer feasible for him to win ......

It/s an outrage that a so-called conservative is allying w/ the hated establishment.....Cruz got elected Senator being anti-GOPe.

=====================================

Cruz is in it only for the money....his donors say he is bombarding them w/ solicitations....says he has a new way to beat Trump........ but it/ll take money. They/re told don't bother to volunteer....just send money.

Cruz/s even got another victory speech (smirk).

Cruz has only his delusions.....he cannot possibly overcome Donald. If his strategies were working, he'd be sitting in Donald/s catbird seat.

THE FACTS ARE THESE Trump got 1,300,000 more votes than Cruz.......thousands switched from Dem to Repub to vote for Trump.......not Cruz.

Cruz is a dam pest.....always underfoot, always got some plan or path that never works. He banked it all on the south and came up empty. Who wants to hear or see him?

He/ll be lucky if he retains his Senate seat. Donald kept him way below the 50% he needed to sweep the Texas delegates. Cruz/s 44% was the poorest showing ever by a Texas Republican....Bush got 88%.

The Houston Chronicle cited experts who say he'll have to posture carefully for the future, and his political career.

If this post means you think Trump will get Rubio voters in the remaining primaries, explain the rationale. I don’t see any crossover between their voters.

If your just being a jerkwad, please don’t talk to me.

Looks to me like Trump really has a path to 1237 without making any deals with Cruz. The most anti-Trump talking head on Fox, Stephen Hayes said today that 3rd party is coming! That can mean only one thing...Hayes has given up on stopping Trump in the coming primaries.
