It's Official: Obama nominates Merrick Garland to U.S. Supreme Court

President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced his nomination of federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court position left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia a month ago.

Obama spoke Wednesday morning in the White House Rose Garden.

"This is not a responsibility that I take lightly," he said, adding that he spoke with a wide group of people ranging from advocacy groups to the Senate Judiciary Committee in his search for a new justice.

He said Garland is well-known in Democratic and Republican circles for his "decency, honesty, integrity (and) even-handedness."

"He's shown a rare ability to bring together odd couples, assemble odd coalitions," he said. "Throughout his jurisprudence runs a common thread: a dedication to protect the rights of every American.”

An hour before his announcement, The Associated Press reported that Garland, chief justice for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, would be the nominee. The wire service cited unnamed congressional sources.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, confirmed the nominee's name, according to Reuters.

He said his search was focused on three main criteria: a potential justice's "rigorous intellect," his or her ability to recognize the limits of the Supreme Court's role and a "keen understanding that justice is not about abstract legal theory, nor some footnote in a dusty casebook."

Irrelevant. If Mr. Garland’s nomination isn’t DOA then the GOP will be.

He looks like a greasy leftist to me.

You know: emanations of penumbras, and all that.

One more nail in our coffin.

Agreed.

Garland is considered a judicial moderate[28] and a centrist.[23] Garland has been described by Nina Totenberg and Carrie Johnson of NPR as “a moderate liberal, with a definite pro-prosecution bent in criminal cases.”[4] The New York Times said he “is often described as brilliant.”[23]

When the winner of the Presidential election is determines...Go Trump...the NEW president will make this decision ... regardless of the candidate ... Obama should not...JMO

It was hard to listen to Obama talk about how the process of nominating and confirming justices needs to happen, etc.

This from a president who sought to filibuster Justice Alito, and who voted against Roberts confirmation.

It was crazy to hear him invoke John Roberts praise of Garland, when Obama himself voted against Roberts when Obama was a Senator himself.

And how crazy to hear Obama say that the Supreme Court especially needs to be above politics. Says the person who voted against Roberts and Alito.

And can I remind us all of the Bork hearings and the Clarence Thomas hearings. Which political party is the party which has so thoroughly politicized the process of confirming judges??? Which political party started all of this???

But now the shoe is on the other foot, now says a liberal Democrat president, now is the time for politics to be cast aside as the Senate takes up a solemn constitutional task of confirming a Supreme Court justice.......
