House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) suggested Tuesday night that he could reach for the Republican presidential nomination during a contested convention in Cleveland.

1, The first thing that will be said is that Trump and Cruz are too divisive. The wise statesmen in the party will claim that the party must unify if it is to win. Cruz will be portrayed as a right wing extremist who is unpopular and therefore incapable of leading the party. Trump will be portrayed as a racist and a crude, bombastic hater who will not gain the votes of independents. The media will say that the Republican Party needs a statesman. The media will say the Republicans need a true conservative who appeals to all people like Ronald Reagan.
2. The media will then identify people who fit the role as uniter, statesmen and true conservative. The candidates that they say fit that description will be Jeb!, Lindsey Graham, Romney, Carly Fiorino and maybe Paul Ryan. Conservatives will object. The media will then say conservatives are too emotional and trying to split the party and lose the election. Democrats will say that they want to run against Trump but fear Romney, Jeb! and Lindsey Graham.
3. Next, for the good of the party Jeb! will announce he will selflessly back out. Jeb! will be portrayed by the media as a brave, unselfish hero who is totally different from the racist haters who support Trump.
4. Finally, a compromise will be reached. I am guessing Romney and Rubio but perhaps Ryan and Rubio or Romney and Ryan. The media will applaud the new found wisdom of the Republican Party in rejecting the right wing extremist Cruz and the racist demagogue Trump.
5. The Republicans will lose the general election in a landslide. The media and the Republican elites will blame Trump and his supporters. The GOPe will vow to change the direction of the party and eliminate racism and border security and right wing extremism from the party.
If Cruz wants to keep his anti-establishment cred, he should form a unity ticket with Trump to defeat the GOP-e.
Self serving POS
Possible but unlikely.
Someone is going to amass the needed delegates and it would likely be Trump.
For the party to shove him aside would be committing political suicide.
Even people opposed to Trump would never accept a candidate the elites might foist on the party already rejected by the voters.
They have to work with the front-runner and nominee apparent whether they like it or not.
The guy who played second fiddle to Willard Romney and got his clock cleaned at a debate against Joe Biden?
The GOPe will hand it to Hillery before they let Trump or Cruz take it
And he will lose big time!
They just can’t get it through their thick skulls that we are fed up with the GOP-EEEEEEE.
“Someone is going to amass the needed delegates and it would likely be Trump.”
I would like to see Trump secure the nomination before the convention.
But I don’t think people realize how bad a brokered convention would probably be.
Karl Rove was on Fox last night saying that it is likely that no candidate will get enough delegates before the convention. He then said that a brokered convention would be good. He that it has happened before and it would help the party get the best candidate.
You will see half of the base leave the Party.
Rove doesn't know what he is talking about-as usual.
agreed, if they do this, they are done
If it is any combination of those you opine, besides being a “will not vote for,” there will also be some very bad down-ticket hell for the Republicans in general. I know I’m done with them, that’s for sure.
When was the last time Karl Rove produced a winner?
“Ryan acknowledged that people are talking to him about how he could get the nomination at a brokered convention where un-pledged delegates can ignore the results of their states primaries once the first convention ballot is taken.”
Who do you think the “people” who are talking to Speaker Ryan about being a candidate are?
Those other people don't know they/re dead....yet.
Ryan was even the guy who allowed himself to be tagged with losing a VP debate to Obama’s Court Jester Joe Biden, who gave a moronic debate performance and made a grinning fool of himself but still beat Ryan like a drum and claimed victory over Ryan and made it stick.
That was pathetic and embarrassing
Ryan is not ready for prime time as a national candidate, much less President of the United States
This was made clear by his performance as Romney's VP and is reinforced by his performance as House Speaker .
“When was the last time Karl Rove produced a winner?”
Karl Rove backed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004. Rove also backed Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination in 2012.
Not a “winner” in that bunch.
