Mc is just an abbreviation of Mac. Our family has always written the Mc with a little “ underneath, to indicate that.

Has nothing to do with Irish or Scottish - they both basically mean ‘son’ - but may have seemed that way because of certain prejudices that impacted the spelling in the US, if I recall.
