The unintentional withdrawals are the latest embarrassment for an agency that has tried to make improvements after years of criticism amid high-profile improprieties and questions about how well it safeguards taxpayers' financial information.

It took several calls to his bank before he found out that the D.C. government had cleaned out the account leaving him with an overdraft fee.
"The money was basically stolen from me. You expect this from the bad guys," he said. "You don't expect this from your government."

Actually the feds can access any of your federally registered accounts. You can thank that worthless FDIC agency.
“Why were they dumb enough to give bank info to the govt?”
They should not be allowed to vote!!
“No fing way Id let these clowns have withdrawal privileges directly from any of my accounts. “
I don’t even E-File my taxes!
I’d laugh if that was a joke.
This is a test. It is only a test. One of these days it won’t be a test.
You want a government check (e.g. Socialist Security or SSI)?
Then by law you will have to sign up for direct deposit with your bank account information.
Problem is. . . when you authorize Direct Deposit. . .you authorize withdrawals for “overpayments” as well. . .
Shades of Greece :)
and the DC Republican Committee grows from 25 to 26 !!

I learned this about 25 years ago when my employer decided to do away with paper checks and do direct deposits. We had to sign a form and give our account routing number, giving them permission to make deposits and withdrawals from our accounts, withdrawals, in case of “over payments”.
No one wanted to sign but doing so was a condition of continuing employment.
It’s just an escalation of “negative interest rates”.
A D.C. lawyer with only $6.5k to his name? LOSER!
I never have and never will do authorized withdrawals/automatic payments. I bank online but sit down every month and tell the bank to send the payments. Anyone who requires auto withdrawals does not get my biz.

I take it you do not get Social Security? You have no choice.
I also a pension plan payout from the State of Texas. Also no choice.
Not that I get any money back (too busy paying my “fair share”), but I just apply any overpayment to the next quarter’s bill. I don’t want IRS with any kind of access to our accounts beyond getting paper checks. F them.

DC is probably a direct depositor to these accounts. 0bamacare is also linked to bank accounts.
Once account info is shared with a gov’t organization, closing the account is the only way I have found to stop any and all access to said account.
But it is so easy to get your tax return deposited directly to your account, or have your scheduled quarterly tax payments made for you../s
This is why you have two accounts. One for DD etc and one you sweep funds into.
You do that too? Everyone I tell to do that looks at me like I have lost my mind.
