HOUSTON - Wendy Ramirez wants to be a doctor. She lives with her parents on a cul-de-sac in Houston.
If a Republican wins the presidential election, she will very possibly have to go to work cleaning houses with her mother.
Ramirez, 24, arrived in the U.S. from Mexico at age 8. She is a "DREAMer": one of the unauthorized immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as a child.
Bypassing congressional conservatives, Obama issued a unilateral order that protected from deportation DREAMers who were in high school or had graduated. He also gave them renewable two-year work permits and the ability to obtain Social Security numbers and driver's licences.
Repeal would send young people with promising white-collar careers back to the precarious under-the-table cash labour they thought they had left behind. Indistinguishable in nearly every way from the citizens they grew up with, they would again be consigned to the permanent underclass.
That is the best-case scenario for them. Worst case is deportation to a country they barely know. Houston is one of America's deportation capitals.
Ramirez is seriously researching a move to Canada.
"I love my life here. I would do anything to keep it. I'm going to fight for it until the end," she said. "But if there are no other options, I'm looking for another opportunity.

So go be a doctor in Mexico.
Well you guys can always take them, eh?
Ask me if I give a shi...er...Obamastuff.
do they mean illegals and we would have t then enforce our laws under Trump?
and this would be the point
Good. Get out, DREAMERS. You should not be here in the first place.
Go DREAM somewhere else...
I knew an American kid who went to med school in Guadalajara.
“Wendy” isn’t a “Dreamer”; she is a criminal, an illegal who should not be here. The fact that she has assimilated better than her ILLEGAL parents doesn’t change the basic facts of her illegal presence here. The fact that if there is a Republican President, she’ll move deeper under the legal radar isn’t something to bleed your heart over, either.
It is not the duty of sovereign US citizens to feed, house, clothe and educate her. Nor is it their job to ensure that she “dreams and thrives.” That job belongs to Mexico or wherever her parents came from.
She will choose a country she presumably does not know over one she ‘barely’ knows.
Let’s hope that ICE agents can stop playing spades and go out and do their jobs again.
Where did that term dreamer come from? Does that mean my kids are non dreamers because we are legal citizens?
Awwwww.
She is 24? Maybe next week she will want to be a rocket scientist.
Many US citizens go to med school in Mexico. Why can’t she?
Amnesty has become impossible because no one believes the political class anymore. They want the border secured, closed. They will not hear of any kind of amnesty while that remains open. We did amnesty before, remember? How did that work out?
“Comprehensive” immigration reform? Forget it. No one believes anything any politician says.
Build the fence. Enforce the law. Let the chips fall.
So she’s willing to legally immigrate to Canada but not the U.S.?
Who should get med school slots? They are a very limited with high levels of competition to get in. Should they go to the sons and daughters of Americans, or foreign nationals? Tell the American kid that they did a couple % worse on their MCAT, so they don’t get the slot in Med school.
This is the real story.
