GETTYSBURG, PA (WHTM/CNN) - Tensions ran high during a Confederate flag rally in Pennsylvania this weekend.
A Southern heritage group held what it calls Confederate Flag Day in Gettysburg, PA, but there were plenty of vocal opponents to the event.
The flag has 13 stars, three stripes and two very different meanings.
The refrain is familiar. Supporters such Mark Landree, executive director of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, says it's about history. Opponents like Christina Hansen only see hate.

One guy with a Confederate flag t-shirt kills some people and the whole Civil War heritage gets thrown in the trash but several mussies go out and kill a bunch of folks and the liberals come and defend them. Something is wrong with this picture.
When the war ended the two sides. Came together and honored one another they held many reunions together there was deep respect among the two sides. Even tho the two sides were bitterly at war. Against one another, they still had profound understanding of another at the surrender of Appomattox Grant, was awed struck by Lee. Even tho Grant, was the victor he treated Lee, like a star Col. Chamberlain the hero, of the Round Tops. Who was by then, a Major General ordered the Army, of the Potomac to sluate. There foe so there’s always been profound respect for ours. And, their heritage while we don’t see eye to eye. One another, causes we don’t go after the Symbols. Of our heritage, these soldiers. Union and Confederate should be honored given dignity. Regurdless, of what thinks of what the war, was about. Because after the blood was spilled those four years. They come together as brother’s who shared there stories, and struggles and they shook one another. Hands I am proud of both Union and Confederate soldiers. They are hero’s who all for they’re respective causes.
If you can do take the walk across farmer Bliss’s field towards Emmitsburg Rd and the copse of trees. And realize the Rebel troops were under continuous fire the whole time.

I agree, except for the “lady” part. That, she is not.
My favorite battlefields to visit are Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, The wilderness, New Market, and Shiloh.

Mr. Mercat and I did Gettysburg on bicycle. Its one of the places we’ve traveled to in the last two years (since retiring) that I definitely want to revisit. We were there at Halloween.

What experts tell me Sharpsburg(Antietam) looks very much like it did in 1862 excerpt for the (stupid) observation tower on the middle of the sunken road. The road over Burnside’s Bridge is gone which kind of run the aesthetics there.
Yeah the civil war, trust desperately tried to have that Tower, removed.
And while on horseback you have an electronic ear bud which is wirelessly receiving transmissions from the Park Ranger who is along with you. He narrates the story and you can almost see what was happening in the battlefield through his skillful prose. An amazing experience.
I made out with a girl that went to Sheperd College in that tower 3 1/2 decades ago.
That sounds great. I now have something else to look forward to when I head up there.
I remember when I went on a tour with horses in TN in the smoky mountains.
Trouble is that some people could not ride horses and had no clue about them,.
The guide stated before we set off that you should not let your horse get too close to the horse in front as it might bite.
Yea I had knee surgery a couple of weeks earlier and was riding when this city slicker Chicago yuppie ignored what he was told and his horse bit mine on a narrow path of the mountain.

Quite correct. My great great granduncle lost a leg at Corinth. After the war, he served as the Governor of Arkansas and United States Senator. He organized veterans organizations in Benton County, Arkansas which after the war had a large population of Union veterans. He presided over joint reunions at Pea Ridge (Elkhorn Tavern), for a time the largest joint Union and Confederate veteran gatherings. After he left the Senate, he was commissioned to establish, mark, and decorate Confederate graves in Union states, mostly located at POW camps. He was invariably welcomed by the local G.A.R. veterans. Soldiers did not care for the politics, and they had full respect for those in uniform on the opposing side.
We should not forget. Every time we see the confederate flag we remember the split between north and south; who won and who lost. It’s more about remembering, the value of what was lost and the value of what was gained. What was lost was slavery, that is of value, what was lost were too many American lives. What was gained was freedom for those who were enslaved and the union remained intact.
I honestly don’t understand the sure ignorance. And, madness. In holding a counter protest, to a great heritage. Organization, like the SCV
