Finland and The Netherlands have already shown their interest in giving people a regular monthly allowance regardless of working status, and now Ontario, Canada, is onboard.
Ontario's government announced in February that a pilot program will be coming to the Canadian province sometime later this year.
The premise: Send people monthly checks to cover living expenses such as food, transportation, clothing, and utilities no questions asked.
It's a radical idea, and one that has been around since the 1960s. It's called "basic income." In the decades since it was first proposed, various researchers and government officials have given basic income experiments a try, with mixed results.
Folks at the Basic Income Canada Network, the national organization promoting basic income, have high hopes.
"We need it rolled out across Canada, and Quebec, too, is in the game," said chair of BICN, Sheila Regehr, in a statement. "So there's no reason why people and governments in other parts of this country need sit on the sidelines it's time for us all to get to work."

If that's what you believe, Sheila, then there's no reason to give away OPM. Stupid twit.
Doesn’t this already exist, welfare?
Is that Canuck for “gibsmedat”?
That will morph into "just collecting the checks Americans can't"...
Yes, I *know* this is Canada. But how far is Canada from Vermont (Sanders) anyway, both geographically and politically, hint hint?
gimmedat gibsmedat I dindu nuffin.
“....it’s time for us all to get to work.”
Get to work?!
If this scheme isn’t an invitation for most Canadians to sit on their haunches and do nothing, I’m a Martian brain surgeon!
Early in his administration, Richard Nixon rolled out something similar called the Family Assistance Plan, which was essentially a guaranteed annual income. One of its most vocal opponents was California governor Ronald Reagan. Toward the end of Nixon’s first term, the scheme died in Congress.
Canada is going to need its own wall.
A Bernie Sanders wet dream.
No need to work.
No need to better oneself.
No need for education or job skills.
No need for ambition or work ethics to get ahead.
No need to produce something.
No need to make any contribution to society whatsoever.
No need to even get up off the couch.
Just vote for Bernie. He’ll make sure someone else pays for it.
Some form of this was advocated long ago by Milton Friedman.

I don’t think it’s a particularly good idea, but the idea of a flat tax combined with it is at least a little bit interesting.
Past experiments don’t appear to have worked out well, since it reduces the incentive to work.
Does anyone see the irony that those who want to give away free money talking about “it’s time to get to work.” ??
Western society is truly in it’s last death gasp!
rewarding non achievers and parasites by using force to enslave and punish the producers and achievers
We should support Canada in this endeavor!
I’m stone serious.
Not only would immigrants flock there, but sooner or later, a lot of American socialist and liberal trash would outflow
Win win!
It’s silly to think that the market won’t respond to all this free money for “basic subsistence”.
Rents will rise to reflect the rise in available money to pay rent, along with everything else.
They will have to institute wage and price controls at the same time.
